Tara Publishing, a commune of artists, writers and designers producing handmade books in Chennai (formerly Madras), India, have created a glowingly mysterious and charming volume that combines mythology from central India's Gond tribe with illustrations from three renowned Gond artists who will appear at museums in several U.S. cities this year. Hand screened onto black paper, the colorful, intricately detailed illustrations are almost psychedelic, in some ways reminiscent of Australian Aboriginal drawings. But the forms are recognizably Indian, and despite stylistic differences among the three artists, the pictures reveal a strong and unique Gond artistic tradition where animals, insects and humans merge with and emerge from the trees. There are magical stories about the protective spirits of the Sambar tree, and the serpent and root-entwined snake goddesses holding the earth together. But the practical uses of trees figure here as well: the wood of the thorny Nagphani tree is hard enough to use as a crowbar, and its sap heals sore eyes; the Ganja (marijuana) bush and the Mahua (alcohol) tree are said to be husband and wife. This mingling of the mythic, mundane and poetic gives an alluring glimpse into an integrative worldview that's in poignant contrast to the fragmented postmodern world. About the Author
Durga Bai is a young woman tribal artist from the Gond tradition of central India. Gond is a ritual and functional art style with distinctive decorative elements, mostly painted on walls of houses, using natural colours. Durga Bai constantly re-works and pushes the borders of the Gond art form to create art that sparkles with a distinctive energy. Bhajju Shyam, of the acclaimed The Night Life of Trees, is the finest living artist of the Gond tribe in India. Intricate and colourful, Bhajju's work is well-known throughout India and has been exhibited in the UK, Germany, Holland and Russia. From the walls of his tribal village home to international acclaim, Bhajju's has been an incredible creative journey. Ram Singh Urveti, an artist from central India, is one of the most brilliant living artists of the Gond tradition. Ram Singh's work has spread the myths and stories of the Gond community throughout Asia, Europe, Australia, and South America and has won him awards nationally and internationally. An amazing book for art lovers...

I first saw this book at a local bookstore, which quickly sold out before I could get a copy. This book is a unique collection of the silkscreen prints of three separate artists from the same cultural tradition in India. Every image depicts a tree and is accompanied by a short myth about the creation or transformation of that tree. The art style is tribal, using intricate patterns of dots and lines. If you are a fan of tribal art styles and mythology, you will treasure this book for a long time to come. I would hesitate to recommend the book as a children's book for children under a certain age to more conservative parents, given references to suicide and drug use, in particular marijuana and alcohol.

On the whole, however, I found this to be an amazing and incredibly beautiful book. I look at it and read it often. The computer images do not do justice to the rich color and texture of the images.

Beautiful and unique.

This has got to be one of the most unique and unusual books I have ever owned. It brings together two of my favorite things: art and trees. Each page of art in this book is hand silk screened on heavy black paper. Once the pages are silk screened, they are bound together in a very appealing binding. The prints depict trees from India, along with a bit of the history and folk lore associated with each particular tree. This book is a numbered edition of only 2,000 copies. You can see how it was created by going to You Tube and typing in "tara books". Definitely a small scale, local operation. The artists are amazing. And the price is very inexpensive for a book of hand printed silk screened prints.

my new favourite thing in the world - this book is a treasure - a delight to hold, touch and be immersed in - be captivated by its stunning use of colour, gorgeous illustrations and poignant tales. I only bought this book because I read a review on Amazon - it was beyond my expectations. I show this book to all my close friends.

Disappointed and it hasn't even shipped yet

Ugh! Spectrum sold out to CC like everyone else! I homeschool my 7th grade son, and we used the 6th grade reading workbook last year. It was one of his favorite things to work on. We both liked the format that was in 2 columns and briefly explained the skill before asking a few questions about it. The work was broken down into sections like Reading Skills, Study Skills, Vocabulary, etc. I really felt like he got a well-rounded education in reading using this workbook. When we finished it, we were so sad that Spectrum did not make a reading book past 6th grade. However, over the summer, we found out and were so excited that Spectrum was indeed coming out with a 7th and an 8th grade reading book!! Unfortunately, after previewing it, we realized they ruined it by changing the format to a common core fill in the blanks style. The WORST part is they ask students to do things that are not introduced first. For example, the student is asked what text structure is the story written in without ever teaching text structure or even giving any explanation. For us, this is a deal breaker. This causes the workbook to be a supplement, not complete enough to use as a real reading book. The skills page listing what skills are covered on which page is also missing. We had such high hopes for this workbook. What a disappointment!

good reading workbook

I have been looking for a vivid and interesting reading workbook for my son for quite some time. This book came as a great help. It contains fiction non-fiction passages, each with an explanatory picture related to the content of the passage. My son really liked the stories and the pictures, especially A Morning in Maine, Birthday Breakfast, A Natural Beauty, and E-mail Advice. The questions of the passages are well developed as well. They integrated a lot of knowledge and ideas, which can greatly improve children's critical thinking. This book also provides specific support in the reading skills and standards that my son is learning in his classroom. My son has already seen how the techniques help him in his normal reading work. He is now probably the top language student in his class. In the Beestar online reading tests (a nice web site beestar.org), he is ranked high in the honor roll. I’m very pleased with this book. It makes reading fun to my son.

My son likes doing reading comprehension practice, so I gave him this inviting workbook. This book includes focused practice for reading comprehension. It has fiction and non-fiction passages, theme and summarization, and integration of knowledge and ideas. The questions are open-ended, and they can help kids to prepare for the year ahead. My son really liked the interesting passages in this book, such as poetry slam, art school, planet of dreams, and moon mystery. This book truly helped my son to reinforce classroom learning and prepare test-taking skills. For more practice, we simply use the online writing exercises on the Beestar website. The worksheets are well-designed and have interesting real-life questions for your child to practice. If you are like me, you will be surprised that kids nowadays are pretty quick and smart in online learning.

This is a pretty good book

This is a pretty good book. It seems to be focused towards the already skilled painter. I have just started in digital illustration and concepts so it can be confusing at times. Often it'll say things like "Refine your painting" which is an empty statement to new people. It shows step by step methods for various kinds of mechanical/futuristic things with instructions worded to allow the artist to create unique pieces. Good for both the digital illustrator and the old fashioned illustrator.

Curiosity lead to disappointment then agreement

Curiosity on what the 20 plus common paradigms were along with the dangers and guidance on each to refocus a safety program was the driver behind my reading this book. As a seasoned Certified Safety Professional, I found I knew the paradigms being presented. I was initially disappointed in the discussion. I did not like how the author shot holes in each and every one of them. Then I discovered his underlying theme was how application of each paradigm typically diverted focus on the key ingredients of a robust safety program, those being: safety responsibility, accountability and hazard mitigation. The arguments against the paradigms then took on a new light. Many had all been in my tool box, and I remembered how their successful use increased when reinforced by the organizations safety responsibility, accountability and hazard mitigation processes. By the books end, I concluded with my own experiences that application of the paradigms were doomed to failure if the organization didn’t maintain the connection to its true purpose, that being preventing opportunities for injury.
