Tibby is still at the capitol when he contacts his space yacht, the NEW ORLEANS, which is just finishing up repairs at Nibaria and asks them to fly ahead to Plosaxen and use its Reverse magnetic Force Field shields to deflect shots by the HAPRIN directed at the planet. Meanwhile, Tibby is officially commissioned into the Federation Space Force as a Fleet Admiral by the Senate. He and Kalana use Tibby’s Mirage Fighter, the ALI to join up with the NEW ORLEANS at Plosaxen. Before they arrive, the Brotherhood, on the HAPRIN, is joined by their ally a Tottalax warship. When Tibby and Kalana arrive, the cloaked NEW ORLEANS is taking heavy fire acting as an invisible shield. Tibby and Kalana are forced to remain cloaked themselves while they wait for the battle to wane so they can board the NEW ORLEANS, however, before they can do so the Tottalax unleashes their sleep weapon in an attempt to disable the NEW ORLEANS crew. Tibby and Kalana are rendered unconscious aboard the ALI as ship continues on its flight path after colliding with the Tottalax. Tibby awakens to alarms going off and the ALI is about to crash into a planet. He discovers his ship has apparently been damaged by an impact with the HAPRIN after he and Kalana lost consciousness. Tibby is barely able to make an emergency landing on the remote desert planet aptly named Desolation when Kalana awakens and announces she is going into labor. Tibby must help Kalana deliver the twins; the ALI is unable to take off or fly again, and nearest help is two light-years away Tibby activates an emergency signal for assistance and rescue, knowing it may be years, if ever, that it will be detected and help arrives.
Tibby has no way of knowing what is happening with the war against the Brotherhood. He knows he needs to get back and take command of the 1st fleet but for now he must focus on caring for Kalana and the twins in a hostile environment, with strange nocturnal creatures on a planet that seems dead by day but comes to life after the sun sets. As time progresses, Tibby must deal with the nagging thought of who will hear his emergency message and arrive first, his friends to rescue him, or the Brotherhood that seeks to kill him.

From the Author
I have been an avid reader of science fiction for over 50 years and in all that time, I have only seen a hand full of science fiction books that incorporate families in the story. In the Solbidyum Wars Saga, starting with book 5, I try a new approach by bringing children into the saga as Tibby and Kalana have twins.  Throughout this book and the rest of the saga, you will get to read about these children growing as seen through the eyes of their father.  Like most fathers, especially those in the military, getting to spend time with one's children is never often enough, but yet bonds are developed, and interactions take place.  I am hoping that by bringing these children into the story it will add an element that will make the stories more realistic, even though they are fiction. I am hoping you will find this addition to the stories interesting and fun, and for those readers who are parents, I hope you can find elements that you can relate to with your own memories of raising your children.  For the rest of you, be assured there still will be plenty of action and intrigue as the war continues to grow, and Tibby leads the battle against the evil Brotherhood.

About the Author
Dale Musser was born in 1944 in a small rural community of Pennsylvania.  From 1967 until 2012 he was employed as a structural and piping designer in the industries of marine and offshore resources, cogeneration power and hard rock mining.  His work at three shipyards and assignments with several engineering and naval architectural firms during his careers in Virginia, Texas, and Maine, took him to such places as London, U.K., Abu Dhabi, U.A.E., Scotland and Mexico.  During this time, he was responsible for the design of reactor compartments for nuclear aircraft carriers and submarines for the U.S. Navy and the structural designs of numerous offshore semi-submersible oil rigs, tanker ships, supply boats, and other vessels and equipment used in the offshore industry.  After the death of his wife in 1999, Mr. Musser changed careers and went to work in Arizona and Utah in the hard rock mining industry.  He retired in the Fall of 2012 and currently resides in Mesa, Arizona.
Dale enjoys rock hunting and lapidary work, gourmet cooking, writing, poetry, art, music, religions and philosophy in small doses, astronomy and the sciences in general, hiking, camping, the outdoors and the gifts that nature provides.  Mr. Musser is a member of Mensa and remains an avid reader, having lost count of all the books he has read after 3,000.
The greatest joy in his life is his daughter, Heather.  Affectionately they call each other "BUBBY."

buckle up and enjoy the ride

Dale-Dale-Dale - brilliantly written, technically-dramatically-comically - I am upset though, as I couldn't put the book down and now have to wait for book 6. All the while, hoping there will be 60 books - the story line you've created is one like I've never experienced before. the depth of characters is phenomenal and your insight to their technology blows me away, this progression seems believable and real. It's also easy to connect with every character, their personalities and emotions bring your books to life. now, I must tell you, I've changed my mind. I've hoped since book one, that your vision makes it to the big screen... A two hour movie, even with sequels will do your books no justice. I'm hoping that one day, everyone will enjoy your stories on the sci-fi channel in a weekly series, that would last several seasons. I eagerly await book 6. Again, great job and thank you for taking my mind on a trip through the Galaxy and beyond.

Wonderful Book

This book is a must for anyone who is interested in integration. McMinn offers practical, helpful and sincere concepts that an experienced and novice counselor can implement in any counseling setting. Most importantly, this book affirms the importance of the therapeutic relationship emphasizing humility and empathy, which are genuinely an overflow from the counselor's own walk with God. A must read.

Masterful Synthesis

Anyone doing counseling or therapy in a Christian context would do well to peruse this remarkable work. In an evolving field rife with controversy, the author presents a calm, reasoned, and inclusive overview of Christian therapeutics. While the basic orientation is to cognitive therapy, psychodynamic principles are not slighted. Subjects such as praying with (or for) the client, the use of Scripture, confession, forgiveness and redemption are all explored. Needless to say, it's not light reading, but it is accessible and understandable. The author presents different theories and points of view, treats all of them with respect, and offers a way for clinicians to think through and reason about clinical dilemmas.

Author Mark McMinn uses a delightful method of presenting brief clinical vignettes, with different possible approaches, different therapists, and different assumptions, and invites the reader to reason through each situation. There are, of course, no simple answers, but there are pitfalls to be avoided and lessons to be learned. The writing style is clear and lucid, with a gentle touch of humor. Ethical issues are discussed in depth. Beyond the techniques and vignettes, Author McMinn explores the foundations of Christian counseling, the underlying theology that must support any therapeutic efforts. The approach is not a bag of tricks. The vital ingredient must be the spiritual growth of the counselor/therapist.

This reviewer, now retired, would love to have had McMinn's book in hand when he was treating patients. For anyone doing Christian counseling now, I cannot recommend this book too highly. Reviewed by Louis N. Gruber.

About the Author

Bruce Colbert is the Director of the Allied Health Department at the University of Pittsburgh at Johnstown. He holds a Master’s in Health Education and Administration, has authored four books, written several articles, and given over 175 invited lectures and workshops at both the regional and national level. Many of his workshops provide teacher training involving techniques to make the health sciences engaging and relevant to today’s students. In addition, he does workshops on developing effective critical and creative thinking, stress and time management, and study skills. He is an avid basketball player, even after three knee surgeries, which may indicate he has some learning difficulties.

 

Jeff Ankney is the Director of Clinical Education for the University of Pittsburgh at Johnstown Respiratory Care program where he is responsible for the development and evaluation of hospital clinical sites. In the past, Jeff has served as a public school teacher, Assistant Director of Cardiopulmonary Services, Program Coordinator of Pulmonary Rehabilitation, and a member of hospital utilization review

and hospital policy committees. He is a consultant on hospital management and pulmonary rehabilitation concerns. Jeff was also the recipient of the American Cancer Society Public Education Award.

 

Karen Lee is an Associate Professor in the Biology Department at the University of Pittsburgh at Johnstown, where she teaches all the anatomy courses, including Anatomy and Physiology for Nursing and Allied Health students. She presents regularly at scientific conferences

and has published several articles on crustacean physiology and behavior. An active member of the Council on Undergraduate Research, she is also the chair of the University of Pittsburgh at Johnstown’s annual undergraduate symposium.

An excellent Introduction to this subject matter!

This is a very well-written text. As I have read through the book I usually supplement what I read with video that I find on youtube; this helps to re-enforce what I read. The text is written in simple to understand words. The quizzes throughout the chapters are nice.

And the DVD works fine, but there are errors throughout the disc. There are obvious mistakes in how the quizzes and such were done. But the video explanations of procedures and stuff are ok. This book needs a better DVD. The DVD was made poorly. Youtube is probably a lot better. Search youtube for companion videos. Yes there are lots of bad videos on youtube, but there are also some really great ones. There is a youtube channel called: khanacademy. Look it up. His videos are extremely accurate and he makes them funny too.

The only negative I can think of is of the style of book. Being that this is a school text, I feel that tit would of been better if it was done as a hardback type of book instead of paperback.

Non-functioning DVD

The DVD that comes with the textbook did not work - either on a PC or MAC. The company from which I purchased the book would not, or could not, remedy the problem. So if you buy this book, you may have problems viewing the DVD which is an integral part of the material.

Marian C. Diamond, Ph.D., is a Professor of Anatomy at the University of California at Berkeley. Set in beautiful Napa Valley, California, Nora Roberts's latest novel portrays a rich world of family-owned wineries, complete with enough romance, sophisticated business intrigue, betrayal, and murder to cow the Medicis of Florence. The Villa focuses on the merger of two prominent winemaking families, the Giambellis and MacMillans, and the incendiary combination of the two upcoming leaders of those dynasties, Sophia Giambelli and Tyler MacMillan. Tyler is the manager of the MacMillan vines and the distilling process, a job that suits his frank and no-frills personality. Creative and flashy, Sophia is head of Giambelli's public relations, and her job has been to put the best spin on whatever her family business produces--hard to do when the merger requires that she and Tyler switch jobs, and particularly hard to do when her own heart seems to spin out of control whenever they're together.

Soon after the merger goes through, Tyler and Sophia learn that they have bigger problems than their conflicting work styles. Tony Avano, a Giambelli executive and Sophia's father, is murdered, and threats surface against the Giambelli women. As a quiet woman, Sophia's mother, Pilar, has made few enemies, except for Tony's new wife, Rene. In description, dialogue, and plot, Roberts's talent and control are as fine as ever. But while the relationship between Pilar and David, the new COO, feels complex and mature, Sophia and Tyler's romance can at times feel slightly forced. As Roberts explains repeatedly, Sophia approaches sex "as a man does," which apparently means with no strings attached. And while that does tend to take the "romance" out of the romance to some extent, the positive aspects to be found in The Villa outweigh this flaw, ensuring another hit for the talented and prolific Roberts. --Nancy R.E. Another novel rich in emotion and rife with conflict from the prolific Roberts (From the Heart; Carolina Moon etc.), this sweeping saga of Northern California wine-making steeps the reader in a heady mix of sex, scandal and the excesses of the supremely wealthy. Sophia Giambelli, sophisticated head of marketing for the family-run Napa Valley winery, is the heiress to the Giambelli empire. She's often compared to her grandmother Tereza, La Signora, who still runs the business. The Giambelli holdings include the 100-year-old Castello di Giambelli in Venice, Italy; Villa Giambelli, operating in the Napa Valley for 64 years; and nearby MacMillan, a 92-year-old firm added to the family holdings when La Signora married Eli MacMillan. The wineries have always operated independently, but now La Signora announces that she wishes to merge all three, occasioning a major restructuring of responsibilities. She orders Sophia to replace Tyler MacMillan, Eli's grandson, and become the wine maker for both families' vineyards. The monosyllabic Tyler will spearhead marketing for the new joint venture. Laying the groundwork for heated fireworks, Sophia and Tyler fight not only each other but also a corporate saboteur who's being fed inside information. Dramatic personal confrontations are exacerbated by La Signora's designation of a new CEO, David Cutter, the only non-Giambelli to hold a position of power. Cutter brings his two teenage children with him to live in the winery guesthouse and immediately falls in love with Sophia's newly divorced mother, Pilar. Other juicy subplots involve manipulative mistresses, dilettante husbands and emotional Italian wives. As usual, Roberts provides plenty of intriguing background information, this time on wine making, and snappy dialogue. (Mar.) Forecast: Villains are easily discerned and susupense is at a minimum in this latest Roberts, but aggressive, savvy female protagonists should prove attractive to readers and enhance word of mouth. Determined that the family legacy of excellent wines will not die when she does, Tereza Giambelli sets her extended family in an uproar when she shuffles the staffing and arranges for her granddaughter Sophia and her step-grandson Tyler McMillan to work together in the business for one year in order to inherit their shares of the company. But displeased as Ty and Sophia are by this arrangement, others are even more upsetAupset enough to kill and destroy in order to get what they want. Working her typical magic, Roberts has penned a fast-paced, clearly plotted story of jealousy, greed, and family discord set in the heart of the Napa Valley, peopled with characters you care about, and well laced with equal helpings of romance and suspense. Roberts (Heart of the Sea) is one of the best known of all romance writers and lives in Keedysville, MD. Fans will be waiting for this one.

Good read set in wine country. Actually learned something about growing grapes and producing wine. Book was, as usual, good mix of romance and mystery. You seemed to know who was responsible for the murder and chaos all along, but a shocker at the end. Not what I expected.
Can't seem to put her books down when I start to read.

Not one of her best.

Not just one villain, but far too many nasty people who all get connected to each other by the end. It feels like a stretch just to get to a clean ending, with all the threads tied up. The two protagonists are engaging, if predictable. Typical Robert's romaantic characters who don't much like each other at the beginning, feel they are too different, not what they are looking for, and of course, by the end, fall madly in love. It just feels dated and forced.

As a Nora Roberts fan, having read all of her books, most of them being an excellent read, I found the Villa among her best. It is a fantastic story with wonderful characters. It's always sad to come to the last page wanting the story to continue, even when the 'bad guy' is found out. i always end the book wishing and hoping for a sequel about one of the characters she introduced, which I'm sure is her intention. Great story!
