Don't let the publisher description fool you

If you buy/bought the latest version of cyclist training bible then you don't need this. It is a line by line view of the adds & mods between the 3rd & 4th edition of Joe's training bible. The title & publisher description is deceptive. So if you have the 3rd Ed & don't want to buy the training bible again, then this is for you. If you bought the 4th Ed, you will not find this to be useful at all.

The exception is the breathtaking autobiography of Field Marshal Erich von Manstein, the brilliant author of many Germany victories against the Soviets in World War II. Dismissive of oft-cited ‘turning points,’ such as the German defeat at Stalingrad, von Manstein contends that the war was never winnable for Germany because of the leader prosecuting it. As for Hitler's once much-vaunted kinship with regular soldiers, he says the Fuehrer had ‘as little in common with the thoughts and emotions of soldiers as had his party with the Prussian virtues which it was so fond of invoking.’ Coming from Hitler's greatest general, it's a most effective filleting.”

After realizing how important von Manstein was, his memoires showed how it was done

It took me fifty years to understand who Erich von Manstein was, an orphan adopted into a family with a Prussian military tradition and with his new grandfather who had successful commanded an army, von Manstein desired to follow in those footsteps. As his mastery of strategic thinking grew, in 1940 he as chief of staff in one German army planned, pushed for and eventually won Hitler's approval over the heads of German military headquarters of his plan that won France in six weeks. From there he rose to command groups of armies on the eastern front as Field-Marshall von Manstein. His memoires describe in detail the strategic and tactical considerations, blows and counterblows which included victories and retreats until his relief in April of 1944. Even though the days of huge land battles are long gone, von Manstein's memoires teach us how huge strategic situations can be thought about and handled. He never was a Nazi, just a German soldier dedicated to his country who gave his best and lost his son in efforts for his country and fellow soldiers.

I have always been curious about how WWII looked form the side of the German military. Manstein's book opened my eyes to the destructive role Hitler played over the German military by interfering in the conduct of the war at the operational level. It also addressed the question of blind obedience the German Generals gave to Hitler. Unfortunately, it did not address the role of the paramilitary units that followed the army into conquered territories inflicting genocide on people. The book explains the idea of mobile war developed by the German General Staff after WWI and its implementation during WWII. One of the most revealing facts was that Hitler did not have an understanding of the doctrine and refused to allow the army to conduct strategic retreats to gain a military advantage by its mobility. This ultimately caused the collapse of the German army in the east through attrition. You have to have a basic understanding of Easter European geography to appreciate the details of each campaign.

Valuable When Read in Context

An incisive, well-written view of important WWII battles from the front row, this book is importantly balanced and enhanced by the accompanying commentary providing needed context about the author and his point of view. Manstein's role in forming post-war judgments on the Wehrmacht was significant, and the commentary helps place this book in its historical context. I found that the unit-by-unit battlefield detail could be wearying, as it was difficult to follow and Kindle does not do maps particularly well. Some of this was aimed, no doubt, at acknowledging the efforts of comrades in arms. The larger assessments were far more interesting to me, including those of Hitler as a military commander/strategist and the Wehrmacht's command, war and political issues. There is an unmistakable defensiveness to the narrative, certainly influenced by post-war and post-hoc concerns. Some of this seems to stem from Prussian military pride and tradition, offended by Hitler's direct involvement in military decisions and operations. But there is also a great silence about the the political units operating within his jurisdiction. Both the Wehrmacht and the Red Army fielded political authorities tasked with carrying out ideological warefare. These units on both sides were responsible for an appalling array of crimes against humanity. Tellingly Manstein describes the work of the Red Army's political commissars in influencing military decisions and operations, but says nothing at all about the work of their counter-part German political units, whose crimes he was ultimately made to answer for after the war. Taken in context, this is an informative and, at times, fascinating read of significant battles by an important commander. However, it is not by any means a full and frank record of those events.

The most important thing you need to pass the Practitioner Exam, at an ok price.

ABOUT THE BOOK:

Since this is the definitive(and currently only) book for the newly created ITIL Practitioner certification, this book is essential for passing the exam. All the material you need to know for the exam is covered in this book. So this book gets points for being complete. There are occasional illustrations and charts included to help understand the concepts, including a helpful appendix with related topics. It can be a bit wordy at times, but I prefer too much information rather than too little.

I bought it on Kindle for $54. It's not a great deal considering the size of the book, but I guess considering that it is the ONLY one on the market they could have taken me for more. So Ill say the price is "OK".

ABOUT THE EXAM THE BOOK PREPARES YOU FOR:

I passed the exam with 80%. To prepare I read this book and took the two sample exams(which are free downloadable PDFs). I also have almost a decade of working in an organization that implements ITIL framework. Axelos currently only hosts "Sample Paper 2" on its website. I did a search for "Sample Paper 1" and found it on some other site. These sample exams are pretty terrible as far as providing clearly worded questions. That may be why they don't include SE1 anymore on their site, it was the worse of the two. I found many of the questions on the sample papers to be ambiguous as far as how to interpret the correct answer. In other words you can understand the content but still answer it wrong due to being unclear about what they are actually asking. So what Im trying to say is that in addition to this book take both of the sample exams(to be prepared for the ambiguity) and read the explanations to the answers so that you will more easily(although not completely) be able to decipher meanings to similar questions on the exam.

Good material

Little bit pricey for the size of the book, but it has good material. One note though, if you're going to take the test. It is an open book test. However, you can only bring an UNMARKED book. So if you like to highlight and write in the margins, you either don't get to use your book or you'll have to buy/borrow another one.

This is essential to anyone that is either heavily involved in IT Service Management or has a passing interest in it. It brings many needed and refreshing views to ITIL as a whole and it does change your perspective about it to a degree. I do not lie when I say that some of the guidance here was sorely needed 8 or 10 years ago.

It is a bit pricey, even the Kindle edition, but it is worth every penny. And it is, of course, indispensable when going through the test.

A lot of great information for writing sales letters

While some information in this book is a bit dated and it was primarily focused on direct marketing, Dan Kennedy also shares timeless principles of writing sales letters that can be applied even today no matter what kind of sales letters you are writing.

Getting to know your target audience will never become outdated, and the suggestions he shares from his past experience are quite thorough. He mentions that in order to get into the mind of his readers, in this instance dentists, he'd read every industry publication every month, visit websites that host discussions forums for dentists, subscribe to email groups where only dentists communicate back and forth, attend industry functions, conventions, seminars, trade shows, he'd play prospect, and routine mastermind with dentists.

He then shares a step-by-step process he used to write a copy, very detailed with various examples. He shares a fill-in-the-blank headlines with examples, different ways to attract attention and to overcome barriers, how to re-write and then he offers an extensive check-list with 35 points to check your copy.

Yes he does have a plug for his website and services which I find appropriate in this book, and he also has a plug for few other tools like mike Capuzzi's CopyDoodles.

He then suggests re-writing for passion, and editing for clarity, and how to test your copy.

At the end of the book you'll find additional resources.

The one copywriting reference you need

If you want one reference book that you will refer to over and over again when writing copy, this is it. This book begins with the basics of copy writing for mine and my clients' projects. It and gives you a few formulas and samples to get you started. I use this book whenever I have a new marketing message to create. It is also the same formula for video sales letters, tele-seminars, and selling from the stage, so don't think this is dated material if you think long form copy writing is dead.

About the Author
Dr. Donelson R. Forsyth is Professor and the Colonel Leo K. and Gaylee Thorsness Endowed Chair in Ethical Leadership in the Jepson School of Leadership Studies at the University of Richmond, where he teaches both graduate and undergraduate courses. His areas of focus include moral judgment, attribution, and group dynamics. His honors include the Outstanding Lecturer Award from the College of Humanities and Sciences and the Outstanding Teacher at Virginia Commonwealth University. A proven author, Dr. Forsyth has written more than 80 chapters and articles, published in such journals as AMERICAN PSYCHOLOGIST, JOURNAL OF PERSONALITY AND SOCIAL PSYCHOLOGY, SOCIAL PSYCHOLOGY QUARTERLY, and JOURNAL OF RESEARCH IN PERSONALITY. A member of numerous editorial boards, he is the founding editor of GROUP DYNAMICS: THEORY, RESEARCH, AND PRACTICE. He received his Ph.D. in Social Psychology from the University of Florida.

Excellent Textbook

Intended as a college text, Forsyth explores all aspects of group dynamics in this one book. Writing is clear, examples are cited extensively and there are numerous tables and diagrams to help the reader absorb the material. It is not intended as light reading or as a practical guide to dealing with group conflict. Instead, it is an excellent and fairly comprehensive theoretical reference book.

On the Hackett edition (with some comparisons)

Hobbes wrote in English, so when it comes to English editions, translation is not an issue. For that reason, there are several good English editions of Leviathan out there. But Edwin Curley's, put out by Hackett, is easily among the best. The main reason for this is that it is the only version I am aware of which includes the variants from the Latin edition. Curley's has other benefits too, such as his inclusion of paragraph numbers, which, though it may seem like a minor detail, greatly eases navigation of the text, especially when reading it with other people. He modernizes Hobbes' spellings, which some readers prefer, and some detest. I don't find that it makes a significant difference, IMHO, although sometimes archaic spellings can get distracting. His introduction is also the best for understanding the significance of the Latin edition, and why and how he makes use of it. Look here first for an excellent edition of Hobbes' Leviathan.

The two other editions to consider are done by Richard Tuck, for Cambridge (Hobbes: Leviathan: Revised student edition (Cambridge Texts in the History of Political Thought)) and J. C. A. Gaskin, for Oxford (Leviathan (Oxford World's Classics)). Of these three, only Tuck retains Hobbes' spelling, which, as mentioned above, is in some ways beneficial, and in some ways confusing--beneficial because it reduces (possibly unwarranted) editorial interpolations, and confusing because modern eyes are not used to it. Gaskin also numbers his paragraphs, and modernizes spelling. Neither incorporate the Latin edition, though both make passing (dismissive) mention of its existence in their introductions. All three can be had without much expense--financial or otherwise--and for serious study it may be worth it to have all three to read alongside each other. If you can only get one, however, get Curley's.
