Always A Clasic Text Book
By Dipak Basu
I read it( first edition) as a first year under-graduate student in the Presidency College, University of Calcutta,India, many years ago.
It was fantastic, to go through it, using mathematical approach, which makes everything so easy to understand.
It has helped me to read easily the Paul Samuelson's Foundations of Economic Analysis, which is a classic on its own.
Now, in its latest edition, it is still a classic, which I use for my undergraduate and sometime post graduate students in Japan. They love it.
If you read it as text, you can sail through any journals of economics without much difficulties.
If there is a Nobel prize for text books, Henderson & Quandt should get it.

The combination of biological elements with electronics is of great interest for many research areas. Inspired by biological signal processes, scientists and engineers are exploring ways of manipulating, assembling, and applying biomolecules and cells on integrated circuits, joining biology with electronic devices. The overall goal is to create bioelectronic devices for biosensing, drug discovery, and curing diseases, but also to build new electronic systems based on biologically inspired concepts. This research area called bioelectronics requires a broad interdisciplinary and transdisciplinary approach to biology and material science. Even though at the frontier of life science and material science, bioelectronics has achieved in the last years many objectives of scientific and industrial relevance, including aspects of electronics and biotechnology. Although the first steps in this field combined biological and electronic units for sensor applications (e. g. , glucose oxidase on an oxygen electrode), we see now many applications in the fields of genomics, proteomics, and celomics as well as electronics. This approach challenges both the researcher and the student to learn and think outside of their zones of comfort and training. Today, one can fabricate electrically active structures that are commensurate in size with biomolecules. The advancement of nanotechnology has influenced bioelectronics to a large extent.

Captain Beefheart's Trout Mask Replica (33 1/3), by Kevin Courrier

In the spring of 1969, the inauspicious release of Captain Beefheart and the Magic Band's Trout Mask Replica, a double-album featuring 28 stream-of-consciousness songs filled with abstract rhythms and guttural bellows, dramatically altered the pop landscape.

Yet even if the album did cast its radical vision over the future of music, much of the record's artistic strength is actually drawn from the past. This book examines how Beefheart's incomparable opus, an album that divided (rather than) united a pop audience, is informed by a variety of diverse sources. Trout Mask Replica is a hybrid of poetic declarations inspired by both Walt Whitman and the beat poets, the field hollers of the Delta Blues, the urban blues of Howlin' Wolf, the gospel blues of Blind Willie Johnson, and the free jazz of Ornette Coleman. This book illustrates how Trout Mask Replica was not so much an arcane specimen of the avant-garde, but rather a defiantly original declaration of the American imagination.

Good companion-piece to the album
By herschel
Having read a few titles in the 33+1/3 series, some veering way off into overly-personal memoir-land, and others delving way too closely into recording minutia, I'd say that Courrier's take on Trout Mask Replica is a perfect middle-ground -- giving plenty of background information on Don Van Vliet, the Magic Band, and Frank Zappa, while still paying proper amount of attention to one of the densest albums of its era -- or ANY era.

I'd especially recommend this title to newcomers trying to plow their way through TMR -- Courrier does an excellent job in deciphering the myriad layers, both for musicians and non-musicians alike.

EXCELLENT COMPANION PIECE TO THE ALBUM!
By Dos Passos
This is a great exploration of TMR. Although I have a few quibbles with Mr. Courrier on various points, his book is a mini-epic that can stand proudly alongside Beefheart and the Magic Band's tour de force.

Courrier creates a nice balance between the geek minutiae of the record and the larger picture (pop music history, Zappa's influence, etc). The writer knew he had a challenge ahead of him and he tackles it with honesty and modesty. No hipster posturing at all....very refreshing.

This is easily the best 33 1/3 book I've read so far. My second fave in the series is the one on Neutral Milk Hotel's "In the Aeroplane...", another cult record worth checking out.

A great compact introduction to indescribable music...
By ewomack
Putting music into words is hard enough, but crafting words to adequately express an album as complicated, multilayered and ineffable as "Trout Mask Replica" must count as the Everest of music criticism. The album itself has infuriated and ingratiated those brave enough to both acknowledge its existence and actually let their cochleas jangle to all of its angularity and often frightening unfamiliarity. Those who last for more than a few listens may find themselves personally changed by the experience. Though the indescribable album definitely has precedents in earlier avant-garde music, the music industry, and especially the rock genre, has simply never produced anything like it before or since. It stands pretty much alone in its singular and individualistic expression.

Of course such treasures often come at a price, as the extremely readable and adequately sized 33 1/3 "Trout Mask Replica" installment points out. Freedom of expression, or so it seems in this case, came at the cost of extreme tyranny over the musical process and the people involved in it. So goes the paradoxes of existence, good sometimes emerges from evil, and vice versa, and freedom sometimes emerges from tyranny and vice versa. If the cacophonous album exudes any one overarching feeling, it exudes the intangibility and slipperiness with which we hold on to reality and that nagging feeling that things are not what they seem. It's a challenging and often uncomfortable listen for newcomers. But that same and almost paranoid claustrophobic feeling can eventually emerge into a new way of seeing and experiencing the world. Long time listeners to "Trout Mask Replica" also speak of the joy emanating from the music that often sounds like the Large Hadron Collider crapping its pants. Something utterly new and affirmative happened here, regardless of the situation from which it arose.

The small, some 150-page 33 1/3 volume doesn't dwell on the negatives. It does shatter many myths, some of which were already shattered, and tries to paint a complete picture of the creative process. Stories of Don Van Vliet, aka Captain Beefheart, from the time of "Trout Mask Replica's" recording, have become horrifyingly legendary. He allegedly sought total control, which apparently included control over the minds and behavior of his supporting band. Dictatorial and emotionally manipulative techniques were sometimes applied, according to those present. Still, the band seemed fervently dedicated to the project at hand, as though they knew this was the process needed to create something astonishingly unique and willingly acquiesced. The band, of course, played a huge role in the creation of "Trout Mask Replica." Most of them, quoted at length in the book from various sources, seem very proud of their accomplishment. They should be.

Short breezy chapters cover varying aspects of this incalculable masterpiece. The preface relays the author's own personal experience with the album. And then the memoir, though interesting, stops. It would have become uninteresting quickly had it continued and permeated the entire book. Then the backstory begins, and the book covers loads of it, including numerous influences from blues, jazz and the visual arts. Clashing, at first harmoniously, biographies of Van Vliet and producer Frank Zappa fill the next few chapters. They were intimately connected by a Webcor recording device. A quick tour through the making of "Captain Beefheart and His Magic Band's" first few recordings, from "Diddy Wah Diddy" to "Strictly Personal," ensues. Then the band moves into the famous house on Ensenada Drive and the seeds of "Trout Mask Replica" are sown. Then the drama begins which ultimately ends in the now infamous 1969 album. Chapter Six provides a song-by-song analysis of the entire album. A final epilogue places the album in the context of its time. Essentially, it doesn't sound like it exists in any context and it more or less ignored the world and cultural happenings outside of itself. In fact, someone with no knowledge of the album would probably have a hard time dating it upon first listen. It sounds both modern and classic. Nonetheless, it seems almost impossible to imagine "Trout Mask Replica" happening at any other time and receiving the attention it received, though sparse in comparison to most popular music. So though it doesn't sound like a product of the late 1960s, it is definitely a product of the late 1960s.

Though actually listening to "Trout Mask Replica" isn't a prerequisite for reading the 33 1/3 installment, it's difficult to imagine deriving a lot from the book without first experiencing the unimaginable music. Fans who have read other sources may not find much new here, but they will find the story presented in a very compact and easily digestible form. Those who have just arrived at the album will find the book a near perfect introduction. Lastly, this book appeared before Don Van Vliet's death in 2010. It instead ends with his musical exile to a trailer somewhere in California, where he dedicated himself to painting. But a final quote from critic Roberto Ohrt aptly sums up Van Vliet's artistic output: "The voice of Don Van Vliet, alias Captain Beefheart, was a signal and a proof that something else was possible - that nothing has to stay the way it is." In 1969, Van Vliet and his band demonstrated that beyond question. And things haven't quite stayed the same since.

KP: The Autobiography, by Kevin Pietersen

The fascinating life story of professional cricketer Kevin Pietersen, MBE, from his childhood in South Africa to his recent experiences as one of the leading lights in the world of international cricket.

Kevin was dropped from the England squad in February 2014, seemingly calling time on an international career that began nearly ten years earlier. The decision puzzled many observers - although the England team had failed miserably in the Ashes tour of 2013-14, Kevin was the tourists' leading run scorer across the series, and he remains the country's highest run scorer of all time across all formats of the game.

Kevin reveals all in his autobiography, telling the stories behind the many other highs and lows of his incredible career. Giving readers the full story of his life, from his childhood in South Africa to his experiences as one of the leading lights in the world of international cricket, KP is an autobiography that entertains and fascinates readers in equal measure.

Good read....but won't change your opinion on KP...
By H. Jin
What's your opinion on KP?

Misunderstood genius, brutal batsman capable of tearing opposition attacks apart, whose brash self-confidence made him a marked man and unfairly scapegoated for every English failure? Or an arrogant tosser, whose big ego disrupted team harmony and cost himself and his team many runs through dumb dismissals? Whatever your view, reading this book is probably not likely to change your view one way or the other. If you love KP, you'll lap this up, and revel in his straight-to-the-point dissection of the personality clashes and victimisation in the English dressing room. If you hate him, it will come across as a petulant self-indulgent sook by someone who played for himself first and team second.

First things first; this is not really an "autobiography", in that there's very little discussion of his childhood, family, early career, etc. The book essentially covers the period 2008-14, from when Pietersen served as captain to when he was omitted from the English team. According to Pietersen, under coaches Peter Moores and especially Andrew Flower, a stuffy and humourless atmosphere developed around English cricket. Plans were rigidly adhered to, standards were enforced by bullying and intimidation, fun was phased out, and individual expression ruthlessly suppressed. It's clear that Pietersen would be unsuited to such an environment, and the bulk of the book describes his frequent clashes with Flower and the majority of his team-mates (especially Strauss, Broad, Swann, and Prior).

It's a fascinating read, if only because such detailed dressing-room dust ups have never been aired so publicly before. Also, it is interesting for the insight it provides into Pietersen's character. As KP tells it, his outward brashness disguised a deep personal insecurity and fear of failure, which was ignored or un-noticed by Flower and Co. No reassurance from coaches or team-mates was forthcoming, no praise for good performances, no acknowledgement of his determined work ethic and assistance to younger players. Instead, he suffers scapegoating, bullying, and isolation by his coach and team-mates, leading to a loss of confidence and form that gives his critics the excuse they need to get rid of him.

On the other hand, you can also see it from Flower's point of view. Pietersen has a tendancy to make mountains out of molehills, which may have overshadowed his more legitimate concerns. Really, KP....was it THAT big a deal to have to wear shoes instead of thongs, or to sit through a few team meetings? Some guy making a parody Twitter account of you.....is that REALLY worth making such a fuss over? Did you have to go out of your way to put everyone's noses out of joint by wanting to choose playing IPL over some games for England? Reading this, I can easily see how Flower and others saw Pietersen's complaints about trivial things to be selfish sulking.

There's plenty more here to get your teeth into, and Pietersen has a very engaging, no-holds-barred approach to writing. If he doesn't like someone, he says so, and makes it very clear why. Despite his claims of "wanting to play for England again", it's pretty clear KP is burning his bridges here. He has no hesitation in dumping a very public bucket over virtually everyone he doesn't agree with. Obviously, critics will see this as childish petulance, and by their lights, they probably have a point.

So as I say, there's probably not much here to change your opinion of KP. Positive or negative, everyone will find something here to support their view of this exciting but polarising figure. So buy this book to cheer on the carefree individual against the rigid system, or sneer at the arrogant playboy screaming "me me me!".

Four stars.

The book isn't what the man is...
By sarfaraz khatib
I'm a huge KP fan. I like him both, as a cricketer as well as a person. Given that we all have shades of grey, it would be inappropriate to expect him to be saintly & attitude-free. It's his mercurial nature that makes him what he is. Unfortunately, despite having some mildly-shocking revelations, the book fails to impress, though it does make one glued to it. First of all, this should never have been called an Autobiography. It isn't one. It neither covers his full journey, nor it goes into details about occurrences apart from the sunset battles. While I personally enjoyed following all English cricketers on Twitter and enjoyed the banter, KP certainly wasn't enjoying it. Sad, he thought it that ugly and he certainly knew the intents better than I did. I am currently reading Ricky Ponting's autobiography and I find it so much more inspiring & enjoyable. KP, man... you deserved a better autobiography than this bitter tale. Thank you for entertaining us over the years.

KP 'goes postal' on English cricket and takes down the management, team-mates and even the tea lady!
By Malleus Maleficarum
1500 years ago, Procopius of Caesarea, the last historian of antiquity wrote 'The Secret History', the ultimate warts and all expose of the inner workings of the court of Justinian I of the Eastern Roman Empire where he laid bare the failings of the most exalted men and women of his time. KP's latest autobiography does a 'Secret History' on English cricket and he pretty much launches a blitzkrieg against his former colleagues and team-mates from which many may never recover. Justinian, at least wasn't alive when the Secret History was published - KP's team-mates are out of luck.
To start off, it's clear that this is not a book about cricket - this is a book written with the sole aim of bringing out in the public domain KP's version of the extraordinary events that led to England's highest ever run-scorer being shunted out by his own team and what a narrative it is! At some points, you know that this is the lashing out of a desperate man who feels he has his back against the wall, with his own comrades having turned against him. There is some desultory description of his childhood and his growing years but the narrative, which oscillates back and forth between the later stages of his international career and events of his past is very clearly setup to provide the context to the behind the scenes revelations that KP wants the public to know.
This book is probably best read as a confessional from a maverick who felt suffocated in his work place. There is precious little romance or the higher ideals of sport here and one would also argue, not an over-abundance of objectivity either. KP's world is dominated by back-stabbers, politicians and petty gossips. There is no doubt about how KP seems himself - the righteous hero who gave his all to his team and got nothing in return but vitriol and slights. It would be easy to dismiss this account as the delusions of an over-sensitive person who had an unreal image of his own achievements but the problem is that KP's record is quite stellar. Throughout his career as a batsman, he has been a stand-out performer in a team that is not really known for stand-out performers.
There-in lies the heart of the story - KP was quite clearly more gifted and talented than most of his team mates and in terms of professional as well as pecuniary accomplishments, he dwarfed his comrades. His book makes it clear that he feels that this made him the target of others in the team who didn't and possibly couldn't have what he had. The tales of team mates sniping against him using a fake twitter account, the jibes on him in the customary books that English cricketers must release every 3 years make one wonder of how adults can be reduced to the level of playground bickering.
What's most devastating though, is the picture he paints of the English cricket team and the management structures around it as a group of clique driven mediocrities who couldn't be trusted. Everyone in KP's sights gets an unbelievable roasting for their hypocrisy and their envious snipes at him. Pride of place goes to his former coach, Andy Flower - feted as a genius who brought about the golden age of English cricket in the late 2000s - but for KP, he is a pitiable corporate mid-manager, who destroyed team morale, betrayed the confidence of players, created an offensive team environment that sucked the joy out of life and was solely interested in managing the bosses. Next up is Matt Prior, probably the only one in the team who was as flashy as KP but surprise, surprise, likes repel! KP is clear that Matt was a buffoon who had limited talent and an unlimited ego, who was only interested in playing the political game and was the consummate 'jerk' - berating his own players when they misfielded (which I find quite rich since the only person to drop more catches than iron-gloves Prior was Pakistan's inept Kamran Akmal). KP lampoons Prior mercilessly and mocks his pompous habit of referring to himself as the Big Cheese, talking up his flashy lifestyle and his efforts to build a coterie of juniors around him. Prior's eventual downfall is something clearly relished by KP and he makes no efforts to hide it. Others to feel the wrath of KP include the nasty bowler's gang of Broad and Swann and the man who disappointed him the most, the milk-sop captain Alistair Cook. KP at last gives the lowdown of what happened in the last few tests of the Ashes, when after being hammered by the Aussies and Mitchell Johnson in particular, the team briefly raised the banner of revolt against Flower's gulag regime but in the end, they folded like umbrellas with Cook betraying his team mate to Flower and making him the scapegoat for the planned anti-Flower coup. There are many more snipes at the political structure of the ECB, which in KP's estimation, is run by non-entities who amounted to nothing in their playing careers but are now just interested in politics and career advancement in a manner which would make even the most canny operators in cut-throat corporates look like amateurs.
As for the book, there is no pretence of this being an even-handed or objective assessment of what went wrong with the English cricket team - this is KP's side of the story and in quite a few incidents that are narrated, readers will find themselves straining to empathize with him. Despite that caveat, I still think this is a very enjoyable book for a number of reasons:
1. Very few international cricketers write with the candour and the no-holds barred approach that is evident in this book. Hence, for most of us fans, the inner workings of the dressing room, the clash of egos and the dysfunctional relationships either remain hidden or at best are hinted at by a few magazines (these are then followed by prosaic 'everything is fine between us' denials)
2. All of us have met and interacted with people like these at some point in our life. Like I said, this is not a book about cricket as much as a confessional about a dysfunctional workplace. We've all had bosses who were mediocre, supervisors who told bald-faced lies, the office suck-ups, the yes-men and all - this book is full of situations and people that most readers will be familiar with and the chances are very high that you'll recognize 2-3 personalities from your own life you absolutely abhor
3. The overall tone of the book is quite honest - to the extent that I think it accurately portrays how KP felt about the incidents and instances mentioned here - and it's quite clear that in 90% of the cases, he felt the aggrieved party. For a man cast as the Ego Who Walks, in 10% of the case he admits quite openly that there were elements of his personality that many would not have liked, he admits he did things that he shouldn't have. KP is also brutally honest about his priorities in life and his approach to the game and the openness with which he talks about should give the reader a very good idea about the man's personality.
Which brings me to my final point. At the end of the day, the discerning reader will clearly notice that in the KP vs the World battle, anything wrong that KP does is a genuine or an honest mistake, he can't help being who he is but almost everything that someone else does is put down to intended malice and diabolical plots hatched by dishonourable men. In what can be construed as paranoia worthy of Nero or Herod I, KP seems to believe that the entire cricket establishment in England, whether by volition or by accident formed a grand alliance to plot against him and bring him down. He was always the wronged party, the tall poppy being cut down by 'peers' who couldn't measure up to him. Yet, I find it hard to believe that KP could have fallen out with almost everyone who is anyone in English cricket without having some role to play - perhaps he downplays it, perhaps he is truly blind to it. I also think that many incidents might have been just stray comments or one-offs which have been weaved into this grand narrative of injustice. When your whole world revolves around yourself (and KP acknowledges that it does) you start thinking that everyone else's world revolves around you too. I would take the claims that there were secret meetings of shadowy figures plotting KP's downfall with quite a lot of pinch of salt. However, I truly believe that this was how KP saw things and more perceptive managers or captains would have noticed this and dealt with it in a more nuanced manner than English cricket's standard off with the non-conformist's head policy.
Overall, this is a good book to get inside the mind of a maverick and a man who was obsessed with playing and living in his own way. Many readers will probably say that KP could have been more of a team man, could have gone along with the silly corporate style team bonding exercises and the team meetings without letting his disdain come through but still, I think it's worthwhile to hear his side of the story - which I presume was all he ever wanted when he set out to write this book.

The missing how-to manual for being an effective team leader

The Art of Coaching Teams is the manual you never received when you signed on to lead a team. Being a great teacher is one thing, but leading a team, or team development, is an entirely different dynamic. Your successes are public, but so are your failures—and there's no specific rubric or curriculum to give you direction. Team development is an art form, and this book is your how-to guide to doing it effectively. You'll learn the administrative tasks that keep your team on track, and you'll gain access to a wealth of downloadable tools that simplify the "getting organized" process. Just as importantly, you'll explore what it means to be the kind of leader that can bring people together to accomplish difficult tasks. You'll find practical suggestions, tools, and clear instructions for the logistics of team development as well as for building trust, developing healthy communication, and managing conflict.

Inside these pages you'll find concrete guidance on:

  • Designing agendas, making decisions, establishing effective protocols, and more
  • Boosting your resilience, understanding and managing your emotions, and meeting your goals
  • Cultivating your team's emotional intelligence and dealing with cynicism
  • Utilizing practical tools to create a customized framework for developing highly effective teams

There is no universal formula for building a great team, because every team is different. Different skills, abilities, personalities, and goals make a one-size-fits-all approach ineffective at best. Instead, The Art of Coaching Teams provides a practical framework to help you develop your group as a whole, and keep the team moving toward their common goals.

Walt faces an icy hell in this New York Times bestseller from the author ofThe Cold Dish and Dry Bones, the seventh novel in the Longmire series, the basis for LONGMIRE, the hit Netflix original series

Well-read and world-weary, Sheriff Walt Longmire has been maintaining order in Wyoming's Absaroka County for more than thirty years, but in this riveting seventh outing, he is pushed to his limits.

Raynaud Shade, an adopted Crow Indian rumored to be one of the country's most dangerous sociopaths, has just confessed to murdering a boy ten years ago and burying him deep within the Bighorn Mountains. Walt is asked to transport Shade through a blizzard to the site, but what begins as a typical criminal transport turns personal when the veteran lawman learns that he knows the dead boy's family. Guided only by Indian mysticism and a battered paperback of Dante's Inferno, Walt braves the icy hell of the Cloud Peak Wilderness Area, cheating death to ensure that justice--both civil and spiritual--is served.

Review
“With Hell is Empty, Craig Johnson delivers an action-packed Western thriller, rife with evocative setting and literary allusion. This seventh novel featuring wise-cracking Sheriff Walt Longmire creeps stealthily out of the corral with an increasingly tense setup.” — The Boston Globe

“Johnson managed a rare feat: a mystery that is a literary novel. The story starts with a hilarious image: Longmire and his deputy sheriff, Santiago "Sancho" Saizarbitoria, hand-feeding a cheeseburger to a manacled prisoner. It gets infinitely more complex from there: an escaped prisoner with dead bodies in his wake; some unlikely unforeseen accomplices and hostages; and Longmire, never one to stand back and wait for help, tracking the criminals through the Bighorn Mountains.” — The Pittsburgh Tribune Review

“Johnson crafts a chilling allegorical tale of resolve and endurance…[and] uses his intimate knowledge of the landscape and wildlife of Wyoming to full advantage, making them characters in the action. Despite the dire situation, Johnson continues to employ gentle, wry humor and an authentic, no-nonsense Western voice in his dialogue, especially in Walt’s thoughts. And the immediacy of Walt’s peril pulls readers into the complex plot. Good stories that take place in the West are in short supply these days, and Johnson’s latest is the real deal with literary clout.” — Denver Post

“Truly great. Reading Craig Johnson is a treat…[He] tells great stories, casts wonderful characters and writes in a style that compels the reader forward…He has outdone himself with his newest book, Hell Is Empty…A piece of quality fiction that is built on so many levels that you could read it two or three times and not catch all that Johnson is trying to say…This book deserves the attention of more than just mystery readers. It is a top-notch novel. It is worth both your money and your time.” — Wyoming Tribune Eagle

“The story starts with a pitch-perfect piece of Johnson’s trademark scene-setting and then roars off into the wilderness, hardly leaving readers time to catch their breaths…In some ways, this reads like a book-length version of the haunting, harrowing final sequence of Johnson’s outstanding debut, The Cold Dish (2005). And when it comes to bad weather, western lore, and a chilling hint of the supernatural, few writers write it better. — Booklist

“Series fans and readers who enjoy C.J. Box and other authors of Western mysteries will be enthralled by this electrifying and intense work; a triumph.” — Library Journal (starred review)

“Stellar…When [Raynaud] Shade, who’s headed for death row in Utah, escapes and takes off into the wilderness with a blizzard threatening, Walt sets off alone on the killer’s trail…Soon Walt is past the point of no return as the snow and ice accumulate on a journey that evokes Dante’s Inferno.” — Publishers Weekly (starred review)

“For Wyoming Sheriff Walt Longmire, the pursuit of a vicious murderer through a killer ice storm in the Bighorn Moutnains adds up to a cold day in hell…Deft as always.” — Kirkus Reviews

“A muscular story of guns and grit, man against man and man against nature…the characters’ ascent is indeed hellish, pulling them deeper into a hypothermic fever dream where the line between the living and the dead blurs.” — ShelfAwareness.com

“Craig Johnson continues to crank out top-notch mystery novels featuring the adventures—and misadventures—of Walt Longmire, a modern-day Wymoning sheriff…Little wonder that he’s a winner of the Spur Award given by the Western Writers of America.” — The Charleston Gazette Mail

"As long as he walked in my county, he would walk in chains."
By Luan Gaines
What begins as a harrowing chase to recapture convicts at large becomes an exercise in survival, the voices of Indian spirits swirling within the snow flurries as Sheriff Walt Longmire climbs ever higher up Wyoming's Big Horn Mountains where child-killer and sociopath Raynaud Shade, a Crow-adopted Canadian Indian, has engineered an escape into the wilderness with four fellow convicts, an entourage of FBI agents and private security guards routed, the gathering teams of law enforcement down mountain impeded by a nightmarish blizzard. Longmire and his prey isolated in the farthest reaches of the wilderness, Walt pursues the violent band armed only with a few weapons, supplies and a tattered copy of Dante's Inferno, unwilling to wait for the arrival of reinforcements. While the situation is particularly hazardous and the sheriff's adversaries, especially Shade, formidable and deadly, it is not uncharacteristic for Longmire to opt for courage over caution.

Longmire's usual accomplices, undersheriff Victoria Moretti, Basque deputy Saizarbitoria (Sancho) and long-time friend Henry Standing Bear are relegated to the sidelines (by weather conditions and by Johnson's plot), available only through sat phone conversations, as the solitary lawman lumbers onward. The physical exertions of the chase push him beyond reasonable limitations- to the point of imminent death- as the two adversaries meet on an icy mountain peak for a final reckoning. Drawing upon his considerable physical reserves, an appreciation for Indian spirits and the tenacity (stubbornness) to survive the most extreme circumstances, Longmire's journey veers into the realm of the existential, a man reduced to the simplicity of survival in a place where "all horrors are horrors of the mind". Beyond reason, Walt moves forward, on the cusp of the Land of the Dead, "the sound of the blackened leather wings of wrathful vengeance folding themselves around me".

Johnson is comfortable in this environment, an intuitive writer cognizant of both evil and the occasional opportunities for redemption that offer an alternative to the abyss. A natural storyteller, Johnson's thrillers are grounded in the physicality of the Wyoming landscape, peopled with multi-dimensional characters, from the killers unleashed on the mountain to the FBI agents whose weapons can't protect them from the cunning of desperate criminals, characters and terrain larger-than-life and unavoidable. Compulsively readable, Johnson's Longmire survives each new physical challenge, but it is his ability to access the world of the spirit that renders him most memorable. Hell Is Empty delivers a fortifying dose of good vs. evil in a spectacular natural environment. Luan Gaines/2011.

The latest superb addition to a splendid series of books
By Robert Moore
A Review of the Entire Series:

I became interested in knowing more about the Walt Longmire Mysteries after learning that it was going to be made into a TNT series starring Katee Sackhoff, who was in one of my all-time favorite series, BATTLESTAR GALACTICA. So I picked up THE COLD DISH and then DEATH WITHOUT COMPANY and then KINDNESS GOES UNPUNISHED and so on through ANOTHER MAN'S MOCASSINS, A DARK HORSE, JUNKYARD DOGS, and on to Craig Johnson's latest offering to the series, HELL IS EMPTY.

I can't express how impressed I am with this series of novels. There are a couple of things to point out.

First, none of these books are written by a formula. About the only thing each novel has in common with the others is that Walt Longmire, the sheriff of Absaroka County, gets battered and beaten in each one. The one ongoing joke, for lack of a better word, in each book is how much physical punishment Walt undergoes. But the novels themselves differ starkly from one to another. Most series reenact the same novel again and again, with only minor alterations from one book to the next. But Craig Johnson clearly refuses to take the easy path, but insists on working hard to create something new each time.

Second, these books are driven by character and are not whodunits. There are mysteries to be solved, but these are not the heart of each book. Most of the novels focus on a series of character portraits of an ensemble cast, but his most recent novel, HELL IS EMPTY focuses on just a couple of characters. But for the most part the books focus on the ensemble. Walt is always front and center because he is the narrator, but we come to know most of the major characters nearly as well, including Victoria "Vic" Moretti, Walt's deputy; his best friend Henry aka "The Cheyenne Nation"; Walt's daughter Cady, the dispatcher Ruby, and many others. The large group of eccentrics making up Walt's world actually reminds me of the town of Cecily, Alaska in NORTHERN EXPOSURE more than it does any other detective or mystery series.

There are a number of other things I really like about the books. I love the literary references. Walt attended USC on a football scholarship, where he was an offensive lineman and majored in Literature (he would have graduated a year before O.J. Simpson arrived and therefore he never blocked for him), and he retains a prodigious knowledge of English language poetry. I'm not a gun guy, but he brings guns into the story in a way that is more fun than usual in such discussions. And you have to love Walt's gentle nature and its contrast with Vic's unrestrained profanity.

The only thing I don't like about the books is the rather stereotyped Indian mysticism. Walt gets visions or prophetic dreams on a regular basis and I generally could have done without all of this. Well, with one exception. I did rather enjoy Virgil in HELL IS EMPTY, his latest book. To give as few spoilers as possible, the book relies heavily on themes and images from Dante's INFERNO, and so it is appropriate that Walt should have a Virgil as his guide, even if Walt himself is well beyond the middle stage of life.

I can't recommend these books strongly enough. I would also strongly recommend reading them in order. That order would be (year of original publication noted - though the books themselves take place in the space of only a year or two):

Cold Dish (2004)
Death Without Company (2006)
Kindness Goes Unpunished (2007)
Another Man's Moccasins (2008)
The Dark Horse (2009)
Junkyard Dogs (2010)
Hell is Empty (2011)

I started off reading these just because of the upcoming television series, but now I love them only for their own sake.

One long chase scene
By Amazon Customer
I've been a fan of Johnson's earlier books in this series, but this one fell flat for me. It's high on Native American mysticism and low on plot. It is essentially not a mystery, but a lengthy chase scene, in which our hero encounters one force of nature after another--wild animals, snowstorm, fire, etc. After a short while, this gets old. Stylistically, the writing is good, but more substance would is needed to make a good, satisfying read.

Rites of Ordination: Their History and Theology, by Paul F. Bradshaw

Paul Bradshaw, one of the world's foremost scholars on the history of Christian liturgy, has shared this expertise in several works that have become standard texts for students of liturgy. In Rites of Ordination, Bradshaw turns his attention to the ways that Christians through the ages have understood what it means to ordain someone as a minister and how that has been expressed in liturgical practice.

Bradshaw considers the typological background to ordained ministry some have drawn from the Old Testament and what ministry meant to the earliest Christian communities. He explores the ordination rites and theology of the early church, the Christian East, the medieval West, the churches of the Reformation, and the post-Tridentine Roman Catholic Church. Rites of Ordination promises to serve as an enriching resource for seminary students, students of liturgy and church history, and anyone fascinated by the history and theology of Christian liturgy and ministry.

Review
“We have come to expect from Paul Bradshaw the very best in critical historical studies of Christian liturgical practice and the most accurate and balanced accounts of the diversities of current Christian liturgical meaning. Both gifts are brilliantly present in this book. No future consideration of the history or the meaning of the appointment to leadership in Christian communities will be able responsibly to ignore this important book. Even more, the excellent questions that Bradshaw puts to every period of this history—including our own—will be able to form the basis for a lively conversation between the churches, a conversation that may move toward both mutual recognition of ministries and mutual admonition about their potential misuses. This is a fair, honest, important, and genuinely ecumenical book.”Gordon W. LathropProfessor of Liturgy EmeritusLutheran Theological Seminary at Philadelphia

One of the great gifts which Bradshaw has brought to liturgical scholarship is recent decades is his sharp eye regarding what we know and what we do not know. . . . [This book] is an extraordinarily rich study of a major focus of development in the life of the church as a whole. Rites of Ordination is a valuable addition to the extensive bibliography of ordination studies which have been published in recent decades.

Informative summary and overview of the key developments
By D. Peter Humphrys
In some aspects this book is a very handy summary of church history, in that it allows one to gain a better understanding of background issues underlying some church conflicts.

Thus, for example, when Arius is in conflict with his bishop Alexander in the fourth century, it is useful to know that a presbyter in Egypt, which Arius was, did not feel his office to be subordinate to that of the bishop and hence was perhaps why he was not willing to back down from his position in deference to "his bishop".

In general I think that Bradshaw represents all sides fairly - particularly in the early period - and I enjoyed his style of writing. Concerning recent developments he really does not engage the various Orthodox churches or those churches who would find little in the Catholic tradition worthy of reforming.

Bradshaw strikes me as very neutral in his discussion and description of developments. I never got the feeling that he is trying to defend some doctrine or development which he favours over another. This is in contrast to some evangelical writers who want to defend the inerrancy of scripture, or some "critical scholars" who are so intent on poking holes in the traditional Christian self understanding that their seeming meta-agenda detracts from the reading of their books.

His discussion of historical developments reflected in various church documents leaves the impression that the New Testament writings would also share this trajectory, i.e. developing over time as sources are reworked which I think that some readers might wish to object to. Also, textual criticism does not enter his discussion in any significant manner that I can remember.

A few more observations: he uses footnotes, there is no bibliography, but there is a five page index, there are a few instances of awkward English usage or missing prepositions in some sentences, and the footnotes are largely accessible to a person only able to work in English though a working knowledge of German, French, and Latin for understanding the meaning of some titles is necessary.
