Not bad... not bad at all

A pure intro into VB 2012 with Windows 8 app XAML development in mind. With this book, I was able to catch up to speed VERY quickly, considering I haven't done much of any "serious" programming since the old VS6 days. The chapters are short, easy to read, easy to grasp, get right to the point, and provide small workable examples. I can now easily navigate around the IDE, write decent small apps on my own, and move on to more advanced books without tilting my head in question wondering what happened. I'm so thankful I wasn't persuaded into having to write another "Hello World" app as an introduction to "Writing Your First Application" ...followed by "See, wasn't that easy?" That kind of crap is a waste of time and paper in my opinion, but who am I? Anyway, thanks for keeping it real Michael Halvorson. The book is small... like just over 330 pages kind of small. So naturally, it doesn't dive too deeply into any of the nitty-gritty stuff. Just the basic need to know stuff, or in my case, a reference to compare how code was written years back to how it is now. I would have liked for it to have more details of data storage (reading/writing Application Data and binding perhaps), but does lightly touch on LINQ and XML files... implementing them in a functioning example app near the end of the book before going into the building and deployment of the Windows 8 store app.

To sum up, this book is VERY basic and does a great job bridging the gaps for old programmers stuck in their stubborn archaic ways, or for the true beginner wanting their first run at programming a Windows 8 app. I'm ready to jump into some advanced stuff now. Four stars for being just what I needed to get started. A bit more extensive... especially near the end, and I'd have easily tossed in the remaining star. Oh, I snagged the Kindle version first. Liking the first 1/4 of the ebook so much, I bought it in print. Prob didn't need to as I was having no issues viewing it on my tablet's reader. I just prefer reference-ish books in print (it's the whole looking stuff up & flipping around from front to back thing).

Essential for learning Windows 8 App Development

As an app developer, this book really shortened the learning curve for me. I found it particularly useful for building my core VB development skills, learning Windows 8 design principles, XAML markup, and what is required for app distribution via the Windows Store. While extremely technical, Halvorson treats me like I'm intelligent and teaches the concepts from the beginning - very helpful!! Get this book and you will build the skills you need for Visual Basic 2012 in the context of Windows 8 and Windows store programming. It's good to see that Halvorson continues to update his VB book. I have two older versions - and he knows his stuff!

IED attacks provide the enemy with a cheap, stand-off, precision targeting system that often provides attackers with complete anonymity. Grossly misleading

This was 100% a "why JIEDDO is important" product and is hardly any form of IED encyclopedia. It includes numerous news articles about JIEDDO, military policies and small bit of general guidance/awareness related to convoy ops. Finally, master DM fundraiser Jeff Brooks spills his guts

This will not be a typical review. First, full disclosure, I know Jeff Brooks by reputation. He was a creative principal at Seattle's legendary Domain Group. The Domain Group was one of those shooting stars in the fundraising industry: they did pioneering work, they blazed new trails for 15 years or so, and now they're gone; bought out ... but not forgotten. These days, Jeff works for TrueSense, a national-level direct mail firm. Insiders rank him among America's very best fundraising copywriters. He also writes, as a public service, the incomparable Future Fundraising Now blog, a professional "tips" bastion of common sense and best practices. Second, full disclosure, although I've only met Jeff once face to face, a decade ago, we do exchange emails, mostly about the mysteries of direct mail. He's the master. I'm the cravenly humble student. Jeff sent me the manuscript for his book a few months ago, to see what I thought. I read it once. I read it twice. And now I flip through it repeatedly every chance I get. Why? Because I write fundraising direct mail for a living. And the only reason I have long-standing clients is because I make them money. Give a copy to anyone who reviews or edits your fundraising copy

Intially, I was skeptical about this book. All of the reviews seemed to be from people who knew the author or are professional copywriters, and they were a little too persuasive and polished. "This is the best fundraising book ever," etc.

I'm 20something fundraiser getting a crash course in the science of fundraising. I've never met the author nor do I plan do. I'm in online fundraising, but these concepts translate easily.

This book is a great summary of the concepts I've discovered over the last 6-8 months about effective fundraising. It's the sort of book that gives you a foundation. It would would be great to come back to before you write copy or use it to get everyone in your organization on the same page about the purpose of your fundraising communications.

I finished my copy last night and passed it off to my colleague this morning. I want my supervisor and management team to read it. Soon.

The book reads like great fundraising copy, which means it's a fast read. It's entertaining and uses stories. I sat down last night to read a chapter, and was 34 pages into the book before I looked up.

This book's strength is how quickly it engages the reader and distills the key points of great fundraising writing. It would be an excellent book to give to anyone who writes, reviews or edits your fundraising communications.

This book is a great text requirement for an MPH program. The only drawback I can think of, is that it is so darn heavy! An e-book or kindle version may not be as user friendly as one may think. Overall, good buy.

Amazing Book!

This was an incredibly good text book and I thoroughly enjoyed reading every bit of it. It is a compilation of topics as an overview of public health in American. The editors did a great job of choosing relevant topics that gave a student a good picture of Public Health and what makes up Public Heath. I highly recommend this book.

As mentioned by another person this book is really wordy for no real reason. I'm sure the same concepts could have been shared more effectively if plain language was used. Also it would have probably cut down the size of the book in half. I studied healthcare administration for my undergrad and now I am pursuing my MHA. Of all the books I've had to read in my healthcare career, this one by far has been the least interesting.

Best book on research design and intro stats

This is hands down the best research book/intro stats book on the market. Finally a teacher who knows how to teach. A bonus is the fact that the text is funny...yes a research text with humor. And it works. Excellent choice. I am a PhD who is reading the book for brush up on my research skills. I read it cover to cover and it is good.

Excellent tool

This book is an excellent tool for researchers and anyone wishing to conduct statistically sound experiments. The authors present clear (and humorous) explanations for various scenarios and appropriate tests. If you ever wondered how in the world you could properly test your Likert-based responses (they are usually non-parametric, so no sum of chi-squares for you), the right tests are in this book. There are also references to SPSS if you use that software.

The level of difficulty is relatively low, but it's still really good practice for those who are trying to learn Portuguese, especially if you already speak a Romance language. It's great!

Good Portuguese book
