At the same time, however, visual illusions and misjudgments have been cited as the probable cause of numerous aviation accidents, and in spite of technological and instructional efforts to remedy some of the problems associated with visual perception in aviation, mishaps of this type continue to occur. Clearly, understanding the role of visual perception in aviation is key to improving pilot performance and reducing aviation mishaps. This book is the first dedicated to the role of visual perception in aviation, and it provides a comprehensive, single-source document encompassing all aspects of aviation visual perception. Thus, this book includes the foundations of visual and vestibular sensation and perception; how visual perceptual abilities are assessed in pilots; the pilot's perspective of visual flying; a summary of human factors research on the visual guidance of flying; examples of specific visual and vestibular illusions and misperceptions; mishap analyses from military, commercial and general aviation; and, finally, how this knowledge is being used to better understand visual perception in aviation's next generation. About the Author
Colonel Randy Gibb has served in the United States Air Force since 1986 after earning his commission and Bachelor of Science degree as a Distinguished Graduate from the United States Air Force Academy. He has flown more than 3,400 hours in the following aircraft: Instructor/Evaluator pilot Northrop T-38 Talon, Instructor/Evaluator pilot Lockheed C-5 Galaxy, Instructor pilot T-3 Firefly, Aircraft Commander Learjet C-21, Instructor/Evaluator pilot Raytheon Beechcraft 400 T-1 Jayhawk, and Instructor T-52 Diamond 40. Colonel Gibb's graduate education includes Master of Science in Engineering, Industrial Engineering - Human Factors, Arizona State University, 1996, Master of Arts in National Security and Strategic Studies, Naval Command and Staff College, Newport RI, 2000, and a PhD in Industrial Engineering - Human Factors, Arizona State University, 2007. Col. Gibb had two flying unit commander positions: he led the 84th Airlift Flight, Peterson AFB, C-21 unit as well as the 99th Flying Training Squadron, Randolph AFB, T-1 unit. He is currently an Assistant Professor and Deputy Department Head, Behavioral Sciences & Leadership Department, United States Air Force Academy teaching classes in human factors, engineering psychology, and introductory psychology. Rob Gray is at the University of Birmingham, UK. He obtained his M.S. and Ph.D. in Experimental Psychology from York University, Canada. After earning his Ph.D. he worked for three years as a Research Scientist with Nissan Research & Development conducting research on driving safety. Since 2002 he has worked as a part-time Research Psychologist with the U.S. Air Force working primarily on flight simulator design. At ASU he directs the Perception & Action Laboratory which investigates visual cues used by pilots for tasks such as landing and low-altitude flight. He has authored 36 journal articles, 17 conference papers, and 7 book chapters. In 2007 he received the American Psychological Association (APA) Distinguished Scientific Award for Early Career Contribution to Psychology and the APA Division 21 Earl Alluisi Award for Early Career Achievement in the Field of Applied Experimental & Engineering Psychology. Lauren Scharff is the Director for the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning and a Professor in the Department of Behavioral Sciences and Leadership at the United States Air Force Academy. Prior to that she was a Professor in the Department of Psychology at Stephen F. Austin State University, where she worked since 1993. She completed her Ph.D. in Human Experimental Psychology (Visual Perception) in December, 1992 from the University of Texas at Austin. She teaches introductory psychology, research methods, biopsychology, and perception courses at the undergraduate and graduate levels, and has won several teaching awards. Her research interests have included depth perception, visual search, text readability, and the human factors of web site design, although her students continually shift her research efforts to new directions. She has also collaborated with researchers at NASA-Ames Research Center to create a metric to predict text readability, including conditions that apply to head-up displays.

These documents, available here in a two volume set, are the only detailed eyewitness records of the most advanced native civilization in North America—the Mississippian culture—a culture that vanished in the wake of European contact.

About the Author
Lawrence A. Clayton attended Duke University (BA, 1964) and earned his MA (1969) and PhD (1972) at Tulane University in Latin American History. From 1964 1966 he served as an officer in the US Navy on the USS Donner (LSD-20), cruising both in the Caribbean and the Mediterranean with the 6th Fleet. He was on the faculty of the University of Alabama from 1972 2013, before retiring in 2013. His specialties focused on Latin American history and the history of the Christian church, and he directed the Latin American Studies Program (1980 1992), and acted as Chair of the Department of History (2000 2007) and Interim Chair (2009 2010). He also held two Senior Fulbright Lecturing Awards, one in 1983 to Costa Rica, and one in 1988 to Peru, lecturing at the University of Costa Rica and the University of Lima respectively. In 1983 he served as President of the South Eastern Council on Latin American Studies, and in 1999 held a year-long Pew Evangelical Scholars Fellowship. His publications include Alabama and the Borderlands: From Prehistory to Statehood (1985), Grace: W. R. Grace and Co., The Formative Years, 1850 1930 (1985), The Hispanic Experience in North America: Sources for Study in the United States (1992), The DeSoto Chronicles (1993, prize-winning), A History of Modern Latin America (2nd edition, 2005), Peru and the United States: The Condor and the Eagle (1999) and Bartolome de las Casas and the Conquest of the Americas (2011). Three of his books have been translated and published in Peru and Ecuador. He is presently engaged in writing a book, The Battle for Cuba: Air War over the Bay of Pigs, April 1961, and is working on the script to a new movie on the Doolittle R.

Volume II: De Soto chronicle La Florida is second to Diaz

This work is a complete collection of chronicles for the De Soto expedition into La Florida (which is most of the south-east USA). Due to the fact that this work comprises two volumes of almost 600 pages each, I have so far only read volume II which is the complete account "La Florida" by Garcilaso de la Vega. Following others (including the Narvaez expedition that de Vaca relates) De Soto went into Florida to find gold and eventually settle the new land. Garcilaso used one captain from the expedition as his source and is a great storyteller, claiming his abhorrence of exaggerating the contents, much of it is told with the heroic chivalry and noble virtue of the times, whether speaking of Spaniards or Indians, and always some purposeful enthusiasm. If all you know of De Soto is that he was the first to see the Mississippi, that doesn't begin to say anything about what happens during the expedition, and even to the way those who were on it considered it afterwards. It shows also the real nature of the natives, showing great differences in their treatment of the Spanish, their use of slavery, and the brutatilty they showed towards other tribes. (Not as placid as Las Casas would have you believe). Also describing the native cultures and life-styles to some degree. All wonderful and interesting stories. The volumes contain some maps and black and white illustrations. Volume I contains all the other existant accounts including the more historical one by the Gentleman of Elvas. Well worth the price.

These books are recent translations of the four major accounts of the De Soto expedition - the Gentleman of Elvas, Luys Hernandez de Biedma, Rodrigo Ranjel, and Garcilaso de la Vega, based on the account of the soldier Gonzalo Silvestre. They also include translations of a number of documents related to the expedition and its members.

The books represent a badly needed update of the older translations by Buckingham Smith. They give us a picture of a world of Native American societies with tens or hundreds of thousands of people, ruled by nobles and leaders in ranked hierarchies through ceremony, ritual and belief. And they represent our last real glimpse of these societies at the beginning of the end - before disease, warfare with Europeans, and the shattering effects of De Soto's entrada destroyed the most powerful and complex cultures north of Mesoamerica.

Archaeologist, historian, and ordinary reader alike will find these books fascinating and important.

About the Author
Clive Orton is Emeritus Professor of Quantitative Archaeology at the University College London Institute of Archaeology. He has won the London and Middlesex Archaeological Society Ralph Merrifield Award for service to London Archaeology and the British Archaeological Awards Lifetime Achievement Award. He is a member of the Archaeology Data Service Management Committee, a member of the advisory board for the Journal of Quantitative Archaeology, the editor of London Archaeologist, a member of the editorial board for Archaeologia e Calcolatori, chairman of Southwark and Lambeth Archaeological Excavation Committee and chair of Gresham Ship Steering Committee. His most recent books include The Pottery from Medieval Novgorod and its Region (2006) and Sampling in Archaeology (2000).

Michael Hughes was Principal Scientific Officer at The British Museum, Department of Conservation and Scientific Research and Senior Lecturer in Forensic Science and Bioscience at the University of East London. More than delivers on the promise of urban farming –offers a useful philosophy as well

Curtis Stone succeeds extraordinarily well in the primary objective of this book. It is an attempt to tell the reader how to establish an urban farm. As the table of contents below indicates, he covers just about every aspect of the question. How to acquire the needed resources: urban land, primarily lawns and some equipment. He advises how to locate customers. He advises what crops to grow.

The book is intensely practical. Although he is known as "the bike farmer" in this Canadian town where he lives, and thus might be taken for a counter-culture sort, he is very forthright in saying that this identity is a marketing tool. It identifies him to his customers, and a bicycle is the cheapest means of transportation. The book is relentlessly focused on the bottom line rather than being wedded to any idealistic principles. Farming is a business, and he tells you how to optimize every aspect of the operation to make it profitable.

Obviously, locally grown organic food appeals to a well-defined sector of the population. Call them crunchy cons, yuppies, urban aesthetes, or whatever else, anybody familiar with the American or Canadian social scene will recognize his customer base. There are people who did not want mass-produced, mass marketed food, and are willing to pay a premium for fresh, pure, locally grown produce. Stone serves three sets of customers: local farmers' markets, Community Supported Agriculture, and restaurants. Community supported agriculture (CSA) are groups in the community that contract with a grower such as Stone to take produce over the course of a growing season or year. This provides a steady customer base and some predictability. The other outlets being more profitable, Stone devotes more space to describing how to establish oneself with farmers markets and restaurants.

Stone starts with several key insights. The first is that there is a broad market in North America for the kind of high quality, organic produce he is able to grow. The second insight is that lawns are a vast underused resource. There are 40 million acres of lawn in America. They account for between 30 and 60 percent of urban water use, and take a lot of time and gasoline to mow. Moreover, homeowners often see them as a pain and bother. Many lawn owners are happy to allow an urban farmer to use the land in exchange for some produce. A third is that urban land is very close to the consumer. A crop can go from field to table in a day. A fourth insight is that cities have their own ecology. There are warmer and better protected from wind than rural farms. Stone's approach all of these advantages to form a profitable business.

The most amazing observation I found in the book is how little land it takes to succeed in urban farming. A half-acre is the greatest area he discusses in the book. Even that small amount, he observes, requires hired help according to his system. Observe that quarter acre lots are extremely common in the suburbs, and you can conclude that it is not difficult to satisfy the land requirements.

Going to the bottom line, Stone writes about generating incomes in the five figure range, comparable with teachers and other professionals who will be among his customers. I will venture some observations that Stone only implies. A five figure income to an urban farmer is a lot more than it is to a teacher. The urban farmer doesn't need to spend a lot of money on clothes, a car to get to and from work, and the other trappings of a professional life. Being reliant on a bicycle (perhaps battery assisted, to pull around a Rototiller on a trailer) is an immediate money saver. A social life is built-in to an urban farmer's life. He is in constant contact with neighbors, chefs, customers in the farmers' market. Stone writes that he is often called upon to speak to community organizations. In the words of Nicholas Nassim Taleb he is "anti-fragile." He can handle customers coming and going, and he does not have a foundation of debt to be serviced. In fact, Stone is rather adamant on the subject of debt: don't use it.

There is a lot of value in the book even to somebody who does not want to implement Stone's model. I live on a third of an acre in Kyiv, Ukraine. We do not have much of the yuppie restaurant market here. You could never get seven dollars a pound for fresh spinach – one or two is more like it. However, the book will be useful to me in planning how to lay out our garden plots, how to use plastic tunnels to extend the growing season, how to control pests and weeds, and how to decide what to plant. I would recommend it to almost any gardener. Stone's bottom line perspective is useful even if you are only deciding what to grow for your own use.

Stone writes about the qualities one looks for in an employee "Paying for labor is worth it only if it allows you to do tasks that cannot be delegated as easily." He comes across as a fair boss, but not one who is in any way committed to socialist notions. Using an employee is a business decision. If they don't contribute to the bottom line, you don't need them.

An assessment of the capital that Stone himself brings to the business is illuminating. In terms of financial capital he is talking about $10,000, give or take. In terms of the human capital that he himself evidently brings, it includes yeoman farmer attributes that we would all like to impute to our ancestors, but we have to observe are rather rare today. Here is the human capital that Stone himself appears to possess:
• An innate sense of entrepreneurship. He looks for opportunities, and assesses each situation in terms of possible benefit.
• Hard work. Stone finds what he is doing interesting and is willing to put the time and to make it successful.
• Facility with tools. Like any farmer, Stone has to invent, construct, repair, and jury-rig equipment to get the job done.
• Gregariousness. Throughout Stone's day he comes in contact with many, many potential customers, and has the patience and the graciousness to talk with all of them.
• Fairness. He does what it takes to be fair to customers, employees, and all around him.
• Curiosity. Stone acquires the knowledge he shares in this book by talking to people, reading, and tinkering and figuring things out.
• Facility with numbers. Stone describes how he uses spreadsheets extensively to plan his operations and record his outcomes.
• Facility with language. He is in constant communication.
• Facility with computers and technology. This is essential to support work with numbers and language in today's world.

Stone's background prior to farming would not at first appear promising. He concluded after a decade and a half as a rock musician that that was not going to be his profession, so he looked for something he could do. He credits his father with an entrepreneurial streak that the son seems to have inherited. So, on the one hand, he started from nothing: no education in farming, no real experience, and precious little capital. On the other hand, in terms of human capital he was extremely well endowed. He had what it took to succeed.

Stone's story is a parable for Millennial youth. These kids emerge from the University chock-full of formal education but with no practical experience, and quite specifically, little notion of the fact that one earns a living by providing the kinds of goods and services that people are willing to pay for. What a blessing it would be to a 16-year-old with no discernible direction in life to get involved in something like urban farming and learn the self-discipline and the talents required to make a success of this fairly basic undertaking. It would prepare one for life. In our yeoman farmer ancestors, such an understanding of how things work was implicit. Stone provides a recipe for going back to these fundamental values.

This book is gold! Heading into my first season as a market farmer this book has answered all of my questions about how i'm going to execute! So many highly useful tidbits of information such as dates to harvest in spring vs summer. Awesome!

There are a lot of gardening books out there, and this book could help you a bit with that, but what this book gives you an overview of how to start a farming business.
The level of detail for producing as efficiently as possible is here. The author does not want to spend time weeding, and has developed a system that works for him to minimize the unnecessary tasks. It is littered with real examples with actual numbers that Curtis Stone has done. Most authors shy away from giving financial details to this degree. Of course each situation is different, but giving real world examples I believe is very helpful.
If you want a book that just deals with growing vegetables, look elsewhere. There is a little bit of that in here, but this book is about high production in minimal space. Becoming efficient in a number of ways to alleviate time for the important tasks. Finding markets and the thought process of decisions of what items to grow.
I am happy to add this book to my library, and if you are after any of the things mentioned above, you will as well.

Loved this smokin' debut!

Excuse me while I hose myself down after reading that one... DAMN that was HOT!!

This book was the hottest thing I've read since the Market Garden books and I'm rounding up to 5 stars because it happened to touch upon many of my personal kinks. 5 stars for excellent erotica. Smoking stuff over here Lana McGregor!! Bravo for a FAB debut book.

This book is all about the sex. Don't expect an epic romance or much action outside the bedroom. However, the sex here is so well done. If you are into virgins and dominance with a side of sweetness (I AM!!) than you will love this book. It reminded me of a steamier version of Anne Tenino's books, which is a huge complement coming from me because I am a Tenino fan-girl. It is low angst and high heat (did I mention that?!?!) and worth staying up until 2:30 am to finish.

I will most certainly be reading more by this author in the future. Thank you for creating a very... distracting novella.

Surprisingly hot read! Impressed.

Despite very mild BDSM and experimentation this book is really about two guys figuring out what they like sexually. The innocence of Adam and Josh was refreshing. Most books today seem to always have a more experienced partner teaching their new lover about sex, even shaping the tastes of the less experienced party. Adam and Josh made discoveries together and communicated openly about what they wanted to try.
One of the reviews mentioned degradation which I'm not a fan of reading, but don't worry there was nothing too crazy in the dialog. In fact Adam and Josh 's interactions were quite sexy if you are into reading male/male.
My only teeny tiny complaint is that the pornography was limited to photos which isn't very realistic with the amount of videos available, however that may have been intentional since Adam and Josh were inexperienced virgins prior to finding each other.
A quick, fun read.

Best Cookbook Bar None

If you are the kind of person who loves boxed cakes with Crisco icing that's so sweet it burns your teeth, don't bother with this book. If on the other hand you actually possess working taste buds, you will find that this cookbook offers the finest selection of cake recipes in existence. Although there are some very elaborate recipes in this book, the heart and soul of it is in the basic cakes and icings. Ms. Levy has gone back and actually taken the trouble to figure out what makes cake work and has therefore been able to improve on recipes and methods. Most of the recipes in this book exchange sweetness for flavor. Therefore the chocolate cake has a deep, intense chocolate-y taste that requires a complimentary icing (or at least a glass of milk). That's the way cake is supposed to be (before they added all the preservatives and moisturizers). If anyone disliked the buttercream icing they either didn't make it right or they are out of their mind. I personally don't care for icings made with egg yolks (too rich) but the icing made with beaten egg whites is pretty much the best thing you could ever frost a cake with and (as stated in the book) flavors magnificently. Ms. Levy's raspberry sauce is better and more intense than most of the sauces I've had in the best restaurants and the same holds true for most of the other fillings.
If anyone doubts that this book is a treasure I offer the simple fact of wedding cakes. To wit, how many times have you seen people actually eat and enjoy a wedding cake? Usually most of it is left over to be thrown out (appropriately). When I have made wedding cakes using this book there has never been a crumb left and people talk about it for years afterward.
Baking is tricky, it's not like cooking where you can make adjustments to fix things. I'm quite surprised when a baking recipe works right off the bat, I expect to blow it the first time out. This book is not about following a few simple steps and cranking out a good cake. This cake is for people who love to bake, love cake and want to become a better baker and learn how to make the types of cakes that suit their palate. Properly used this book can give you the tools to create your own style of cakes that will in time become identified with you by everyone who experiences them.
The Cake Bible is one of the foundational cookbooks in my collection and by far the most often used. I agree that the binding could be better but who needs photos of plain chocolate cake? Books with pictures are for coffee tables, this book is for the kitchen. I would recommend it to anyone with a passion for baking.
