Wonderful!

I bought this book from a yardsale for a dollar, and didn't expect much. I regret that I actually set it at the bottom of my reading list because the moment I started reading it, I was hooked. It's an engrossing, educating and incredibly entertaining rea, rich in period detail. It's one of my favorite pieces of historical fiction.

I highly recommend it, as well as this book's sequel, "The Midwife's Advice."

Wake Up Call

When I read this book, I just couldn't put it down. I felt as though I was a valuable part of her life, throughout this book, and in the follow up book, "The Midwife's Advice." Reading this book provided me with a chance to reaffirm my beliefs, as a woman. The wonderful thing about this story, and in the other books by this author is that you can explore your own life, as the characters unfold. So many things that Hannah and those close to her said, in response to their life's struggles, I have copied into my quotes journal. And now some of their responses are part of my way of being amongst others. You don't have to be a mother, a medical professional, or a woman to get a great deal from this book. It speaks to the human spirit, across the board.

Brilliant writing! Beautiful story!

Though I was intimidated by the length of this book, I am so glad I read it. I immediately fell in love with the writing style, the subject matter and the characters. Midwifery is a hot topic for me and this book was right up my alley.
In addition to the midwifery aspects of the book, there was also plenty of story to go with it. Fleeing from your homeland, living in steerage on a boat, learning the culture of a new country, and so much more. Courter did a wonderful job expressing such a beautiful story. I've yet to read the sequel but it's on my list of things to read this year!

About the Author

Karen Morgaine, PhD, is a queer, white, academic with a penchant for critical theory and anarchist/Buddhist/feminist/post-colonial perspectives. After working in the domestic violence and community mental health fields for ten years, she completed her PhD in social work and social research at Portland State University. She fortuitously landed in a sociology department at California State University, Northridge, where she is able to teach a variety of courses related to social welfare and social justice including courses in community organizing, social movements, and LGBTQQI communities. Her research leans towards analysis of social movement framing and issues related to power and privilege within social movements and identity groups. When not in the classroom or in front of the computer, she can be found dining all around Los Angeles, biking/doing yoga/lifting weights, and laughing a lot with her partner.

Moshoula Capous-Desyllas, PhD, MSW, is an assistant professor in the sociology department at California State University, Northridge. She teaches social work courses in anti-oppressive practice, diversity and social justice, human behavior in the social environment, and social work methods. Her interests include arts-based research methods, community-based participatory action research, community organizing and advocacy, social work with immigrants, trans-global migration issues, commercial sex work, and intersecting oppressions. She is committed to facilitating community dialogue and a deeper understanding about issues of diversity and social justice through art. Her passion lies in highlighting the voices of marginalized communities through the use of art as a form of activism, empowerment and social change. When school isn’t in session, she can be found kayaking in the Sea of Cortez or the Agean Sea, or lost in the global South with a backpack in tow.

My congratulations to these authors for their accomplishment in bringing anti-oppressive theory and practice as the organizing theme for a mainstream textbook in the United States. Faculty and students will benefit enormously from reading this book and developing a familiarity with the progressive concepts. This pioneering book does a tremendous job in moving anti-oppressive concepts forward and helping to radicalize social work.

Brainstorming Games and Creativity Enhancers

I have facilitated lots of meetings and helped many teams with their brainstorming using the traditional methods and a few creative alternatives, so I know what it takes to lead idea generation. Scannell and Multihull's book offers 67 activities that enhance the creative idea generation process using pre-meeting tools, icebreakers, creative and lateral thinking techniques, collaboration exercises, problem solving activities, as well as listening and feedback skill-building. In addition to describing Osborn's 4 principles of brainstorming that most teaming experts know, the SCAMPER (Substitute, Combine, Adapt, Modify, Purpose, Eliminate, and Reverse) method developed by Eberle is explained along with sample activities to support both of these. Anyone who facilitates meetings that include brainstorming should get this book and review the 7 pages on "how to run your brainstorming session" before planning meetings. The book recommends impartial facilitators lead sessions instead of team members or supervisors. I have several of the books in this series and while the book are very good the solution for some games are not included and more details on the task as at times it was not clear how to execute. But the games I selected to use were very well received by the participants. A lot of the games do not need a lot of props which is good.

Henry II of Silesia was dead, Boleslav IV, Count of the Poles, was in hiding, and the kingdom of Hungary no longer existed; its king, Bela IV, was fleeing to the Adriatic coast pursued by a Mongol army determined to kill him. As for the country itself, the Mongols began to systematically strip and depopulate it and to strike coins. It belonged to Batu, grandson of Jinghiz Khan, the Emperor of All Men. Meanwhile, Pope Gregory IX and the Holy Roman Emperor Frederick II prepared to continue their person¬al war while Mongol scouts approached Venice. There was no army the Europeans could muster to oppose them. There seemed no reason to suppose that Western Europe would not suffer the fate of central Europe and Russia. In February 1241 the Mongol army had left its base in southern Russia and begun to cross the frozen rivers into central Europe. It consisted of about seventy thousand men, all of them cavalry. Nominally com¬manded by Batu, a grandson of Jinghiz Khan, he was guided by his grandfather’s famous lieutenant, Subotai, a brilliant campaigner. This general had commanded in the campaigns against the Northern Sung of China and had helped in the destruction of the Kwarizmian Em¬pire. He had planned the campaign against Europe for a year and the results would show.

Very useful.

The publisher hasn't seen fit to provide a description of this book's contents, so I shall. Friar Carpini was sent by Pope Innocent IV on an embassy to the Mongols; this is his account of the journey. He met Batu Khan in Russia and then journeyed onward to reach the court of Guyuk Khan. He had been sent to preach Christianity to the Mongols and to offer baptism, but the other important part of his mission was to spy on them, for the Europeans were almost wholly ignorant of the Mongols when they swept acroos Europe. The chapter subheadings are perhaps the best guide to the book's contents:

1. The Tartar Country, its Location and Description and its Weather.
2. The People, their Clothes, Homes, Possessions and Marriages
3. Religion, What the Tartars Believe are Sins; Divination, Absolution and Funeral Rites
4. Their Good and Bad Customs, their Food and their Habits
5. The Founder of the Tartar Empire, its Princes and the Power of the Emperor and his Government
6. War, the Organization of the Tartar Forces, their Arms, their Tactics when Fighting and their Cruelty to Captives, How they Besiege Forts, and their Treachery toward those who Surrender to them
7. How the Tartars Make Peace; the Countries they have Conquered, the Countries which have Resisted them Successfully, and the Despotism the Tartars Exert over their Subjects
8. How to Fight the Tartars and what to Expect; the Arms and Organization of such Forces; How to Meet Tartar Cunning in Battle, and how to Supply Fortresses and Cities, and What should be Done with Captives
9. The Provinces We Passed Through and their Location; the Court of the Emperor of the Tartars and his Government, and the Witnesses who Met us there
Carpini isn't encyclopedic on any of these subjects, but he does manage a decent overview. There are only a couple of illustrations and no maps; the book would be improved if the reader could see where Carpini went, and pictures of what he's talking about. But it's very handy all the same.

A must read primary source!

If you are in the process of reading about Mongolia and its domination of world afairs in the 13th century, then this book is a must read. Eric Hildiger's translation makes this work by the Friar flow in a smooth easy readable manner. If you are a student of History then you know the invaluable nature of primary sources. This account reflects the attitudes of Europeans at this time period toward the peoples from the steppe and yet it is surprisingly refreshing in pointing out characteristics that the Europeans might emulate. The Friar's accounts of events has become the main source for many works written about this era . I highly recommend this book as a starting off point for this subject area.

Romans in China?

A fascinating book! Of interest not only to the expert, but also to everyone seriously interested in history. The following article provides perspective. On August 24, 2000, The Los Angeles Times carried an article headlined "Digging for Romans in China." The article presented evidence for a Roman legion having been stationed in China sometime around the beginning of this era. The Romans apparently stayed a considerable while, and very likely intermarried with the local Chinese.
What? Romans in China? But wasn't Marco Polo the first? No, he was simply the most famous. Sporadic, but unrecorded, contacts quite possibly occurred since the domestication of the horse in prehistoric times. Nor was Marco Polo the first documented contact. Preceding him by some fifty year was Friar Giovanni di Plano Carpini.
In Giovanni's time, about 1250 AD, some 800 years had passed since the devastation caused by the Huns, but these events were by no means forgotten. Reports filtering in regarding the Mongols (also called Tartars) were even more frightening. Europe badly needed information on how to deal with this new threat. Friar Giovanni was sent by the Pope to convert the Mongols to Christianity -- if possible. But the main purpose of his mission was to spy.
Friar Giovanni seems like an unlikely emissary/spy - he was sixty years old and corpulent; but he executed his mission admirably. His slender book is not only an important historical source, but also a most fascinating record of his observations. Compared to other medieval travel accounts (e.g., Polo, Mandeville) Giovanni's is very measured and matter of fact; nor does he pepper his account with numerous fantastic assertions. Yet - and this is the fascinating part - he is not entirely free of these either. He mentions a race of people who have no knees; another race whose women are of human appearance, but whose men have the shape of a dog; another who have only one arm and leg, and who must work in pairs to shoot a bow; yet another have very small mouths and live off the fumes of their cooking; and several more. He also mentions a place where the sun makes such a terrible sound (yes, sound!) that people live underground. Now, he does not actually claim to have seen these wonders. So why does he seemingly cheapen his account by including these? My own explanation is this: the medieval worldview required that such creatures exist. It appears to have been the duty of every writer of travel accounts to confirm this worldview.
But then, have we really gotten very far away? What about recurrent reports of Bigfoot? And what about the strange menagerie populating Star Wars and Star Trek?
The cover of the book is a gem! Taken around 1900, it shows a Mongol warrior in full panoply - he could have stepped right out of the army of Jenghis Khan! Worth getting for the cover alone.

GREAT STORY HEARTBREAK , LOVE , HEALING etc etc !! MUST READ

What a refreshing read !! I love going back into the minds of high school kids !! Drama , angst , heartache and all kinds of yumminess involved in young love and of course sowing your wild oats !! Seona and Jayceon have great stories to tell apart and a beautiful story together !! Many of their struggles are very real life and intense. I am happy to look back to my high school years and realize I did not have it that bad at all !! A great read , written by two wonderful authors !!

Seona has had a horrible time for the past 6 years since her mom died. Her father has never been a good father. She has always suffered from his verbal abuse and now has finally had enough and at the start of her senior year in high school she takes off to go live in Texas with her step brother Travis and his father Mark. On her first day already torn between the popular group and a star football player that everyone seems to be against , Seona finds her voice and begins to make a name for herself and a friend in someone who seems to not want to be her friend !!

Jayceon is one of the best football players in school. He is a great guy and had always been popular , that is until he walked in on something and tried to help. That blew up in his face and now he has spent the past year being bullied and shunned by most of his teammates. He has his best friend Alyssa and Brendan who attempts to have his back for the most part. The new girl comes in and there is some serious stares between them but Jayceon is automatically turned off when he finds her hanging with Chaz , the bane of his existence !! A connection between Jayceon's dad and Seona's stepbrother Travis may just be the thing to bring them together or not !!

This story is a rollercoaster of emotions !! Bullying , verbal abuse , attempted sexual abuse , drugs , alcohol , jealous best friends , rumors and heartache seem to plague these two throughout the year. Their journey is long and exhausting and makes you want to rip your hair out at times. Will their pasts tear them apart or will their own fears ruin their chances of happiness ??

Jayceon is amazing. I just love him to pieces. He may have had a great family life growing up but the crap he has dealt with silently for the past year could have ruined him. Instead he acts as the better person and may just come out on top. I liked Seona , I felt for her and really wanted to her to find happiness in her family and with Jayceon !! Really great story I totally recommend it to anyone I read it in a matter of hours couldn't put it down !!

After the death of her mother 6 years ago, Seona has lived in hell with her mentally abusive father. Turning to partying, drinking and casual sex to numb the pain isn't working anymore. Seona runs away to Texas to live with her Stepbrother, Travis and his dad Mark. She is determined to leave her bad girl rep in Michigan.

Jayceon had a really good life. Great parents, popular at school, good grades, good at football and art. His life was near perfect until a year ago. He found someone doing something wrong, and when he tried to right the wrong everyone turned on him. He is tormented every day in school and on the football field. The only person that has stuck with him is his best friend Alyssa and a fellow teammate, Brendan. Jayceon is just trying to duck his head and get through the last year of school before he heads off to college.

When Seona walks into the cafeteria her first day at school her eyes lock with Jayecon's. They are both immediately attracted to one another.

Jayceon is attracted to Seona, but he doesn't trust anyone. Especially someone who hangs out with the kids that torture him. They are thrown together by chance and Seona works hard to break down Jayceon's walls, but what happens when Seona's past shows up in her present. Will Jayceon and Seona stick together or go their separate ways?

I was lucky enough to get to beta read this book. I really enjoyed it. It kept me enthralled and turning the pages. It kept me sitting on the edge of my seat waiting to get my next chapters to read. I love Rebecca's writing, but this is my first book by S. Moose. I have to say I couldn't tell who wrote which parts, the writing flowed so well together.

Jayceon was a very likable character. I wanted to hug him and tell him everything would be okay. Seona at times came off as immature and her bad girl persona shined through at times, but together they were sweet and had a good chemistry. This story takes you on that emotional rollercoaster. These authors draw you in and keep you turning the pages to see what will happen next.

I also enjoyed the secondary characters of Brendan and Claire, and think they may have stories to tell as well. Guess we'll have to wait and see the the authors agree.

So I actually didn't mean to buy this book. My internet jumped as I was reading the reviews and I hit one click. I must say I am glad it did that. This is a great book all the problems that Seona and jayceon went through broke my heart. I kinda knew that Alyssa would be a problem it's the whole girl BFF thing they think they own the guys. But I'm happy about the ending I recommend this book to anyone. It has some bullying issues and the way it was written was great they never really took it too far but just far enough to not make you want to stop reading. Good job!!
