About the Author
Over the past thirty-five plus years, Eugene has been involved in all aspects of the HVAC/R industry from field technician and system designer to company owner, teacher, administrator, consultant and author. Eugene is presently an Assistant Professor and lead faculty member for the HVAC/R program at Suffolk County Community College in Brentwood, New York. Eugene has twenty-three years of teaching experience and has taught HVAC at several institutions. Eugene earned his dual Bachelors Degree from The City College of New York and his Masters of Science degree from Stony Brook University, where he specialized in renewable and sustainable energy sources. He earned his Certified Master HVAC/R Educator (CMHE) credential from the ESCO Group. Eugene also carries the BEAP credential issued by ASHRAE, classifying him as a Building Energy Assessment Professional. Eugene, an active member of both ASHRAE and RSES, served as the author and subject matter expert for multiple projects including Refrigeration and Air Conditioning Technology, 6th and 7th Editions, Residential Construction Academy: HVAC, 1st and 2nd Edition, Pressure Enthalpy Without Tears (2006), Heat Pumps, 1st and 2nd Editions and Psychrometrics Without Tears (2014).

One part intellectual and one part journalist, Ron Rosenbaum offers a thick book full of his writing from Esquire, Vanity Fair, The New York Times Magazine, and The New York Observer (where he is currently a columnist). Perhaps not every selection will interest every reader--the diversity of topics is incredible--but there is probably something, or many things, for everyone in The Secret Parts of Fortune.

An outstanding entry is an excerpt from his celebrated book Explaining Hitler. Other highlights include a hilarious interview with Robin Leach (entitled "The Frantic Screaming Voice of the Rich and Famous"), an explanation of why Murray Kempton "is the best prose writer in America," and a short history of computer hackers. One of Rosenbaum's finest pieces focuses on the cancer-cure underground: "False hope springs eternal," he writes, describing how phony cancer "cures seem to spring up and sweep the nation like religious revivals, a new one at least every decade." Yet he's sympathetic--or at least mildly understanding--of the motivations behind the fake healers: the movement isn't "composed mainly of cash-hungry charlatans and snake-oil salesmen eager to make an easy killing off the sufferings and hopes of cancer victims. In fact, among the healers, the prophets, and the alchemists, you find less greed than evangelical fervor--the rapturous conviction of religious visionaries."

Rosenbaum is rougher with Bill Gates; he lights into the billionaire's fabled high-tech home, which he says "exhibits the distinctive feature of the totalitarian mind: the inability to distinguish between private and public spheres. It suggests this isn't just the way he wants to run his house, it's the way he wants to run the world: total surveillance, enforced entertainment, everyone isolated in programmable pods." Yet another standout is Rosenbaum's article on Kim Philby, the British intelligence officer who spied against his native land on behalf of the Soviets. Or did he? Rosenbaum considers the fascinating "possibility that Philby had been not a Soviet double agent but a British triple agent." And there's so much more. Rosenbaum (Explaining Hitler) has collected some previously published essays that span three decades of his accomplished career as a journalist and illustrate his wide-ranging interests. The sheer breadth of this volume, which covers topics such as politics, conspiracy theory, entertainment, crime, and literature, may overwhelm the casual reader, but Rosenbaum's thorough investigations and decisive voice make for an intriguing collection. In "Turn On, Tune In, and Drop Dead," for example, Rosenbaum critiques Dr. Elizabeth K bler-Ross, leader of what he calls the "death-and-dying movement," arguing that K bler-Ross and her followers are misguided: "Death has claimed another victim, the mind of K bler-Ross." No matter what the subject of his scrutiny, Rosenbaum never fears making judgments, but he never rushes to them either; nor does he shy from examining how his subjects have affected him. His consideration of conspiracy theories surrounding both Watergate and the JFK assassination and his expos of hoax serial killer Henry Lee Lucas are journalism at its finest. Rosenbaum, The Gnostic Explorer

Ron Rosenbaum got a lot of attention a couple of years ago with his amazing book "Explaining Hitler", which was about all the different theories people have come up with to account for that figure's almost overwhelming evil. However, he has been writing journalism for thirty years that explores the hidden underside of contemporary culture--the "gnostic knowledge", if you will, of the modern world. This book is a thick, satisfying collection of much of that work. Some of the best stuff: an exploration of Kim Philby and the information about him that Graham Greene might have taken to his death. An amusing expose of the naked "posture photos" that used to be required of every freshman at Ivy League universities. His Hitler essay that first appeared in the "New Yorker" magazine. The inside poop on the secret society of "Skull and Bones." There is also a lot of terrific "literary journalism"--the best essay I've ever read on J.D. Salinger, which first appeared in "Esquire"; along with his famous take on the underappreciated Charles Portis, which got his books back into print. Also, perceptive stuff on Martin Amis and an explanation of how the lost art of the "close reading" of the old-fashioned "New Critics" is better than post-modernism at explaining the world. Rosenbaum is definitely *not* a conspiracy theorist; his real subject is how human beings respond to mystery. He contrasts his own shifting views on the JFK asassination ("Oswald's Ghost") with the fatal paranoia that eventually overcame the late Danny Casolaro. This is an endlessly fascinating book--highly recommended for mystery lovers, history buffs, and fans of the weird and unexplained.

America's best living essayist

I have to confess being unfamiliar with Ron Rosenbaum until reading his excellent, perceptive book "Explaining Hitler." What a pleasure, then, that he has followed that book up with this collection of his magazine work extending over the past three decades. The essays collected here are a mixed bag showing Rosenbaum's extensive range, from amusing short pieces to long works in depth. Some personal favorites include his early exploration of the world of phone phreaks (in which Rosenbaum predicted, correctly, that computer hacking was the wave of the future - this in 1971!), his exposure of the Henry Lee Lucas serial killer hoax, his slightly crazed looks at TV culture via the war over canned laughter and the eminence of Mr. Whipple in toilet paper advertising, a short but incredibly horrible glimpse of early 60s teen film star Troy Donahue debauched and decrepit in the early 70s, his explorations into the world of the Kennedy assassination mythos, a brief, horrified look at Bill Gates' house, and his wonderful exposure of Yale's weird Skull and Bones fraternity. Every piece is well worth your time and several are worthy of close rereading. Rosenbaum is a fine writer, improving continuously as this collection shows (and he started at a very high level), and I'll be looking for his magazine pieces from now on.

Very Dense

I had never read Ron Rosenbaum before I purchased this book and while I don't love everything I've read so far, I do have a great deal of respect for Rosenbaum as a journalist. To put it simply: he's brilliant. It's so refreshing to read his work. He's one of the best journalists I've ever read and am so glad that amazon brought him to my attention.
My problem with the book was that many of his essays just didn't grab me. The synopsis described several topics which I was sure would interest me but when I actually read them I found the writing style a bit dense and bogged down. I don't ever expect to like everything I read in collections. I particularly liked "The Great Ivy League Nude Posture Photo Scandal," as well as "Henry: Portrait of a Serial Killer Hoax." This is the kind of compilation which I would not recommend attempting to read in one sitting. Smaller portions worked best for me. This is a wonderful collection of Rosenbaum's work, and while I haven't read them all yet, so far, so good.

Who is in control?

Wendell Wallach is the go-to person for informed and level-headed insights and ideas about the contemporary technological condition of humanity. For the last decade I have had the privilege of sitting in on his working group at Yale’s Interdisciplinary Bioethics Center and observing his tireless efforts to address every facet of our sociotechnical situation. Scores of experts, recruited by Wallach on his continual travels to conferences in the U.S. and abroad, have introduced us to the marvels and dangers, the dreams and realities, the problems and possible solutions engendered by the ever more rapidly proliferating products of science and engineering. This book represents the full flowering of Wallach’s project.

What is distinctive about “A Dangerous Master” is not only its comprehensive survey of such a vast terrain, but also its critical take on the risks and speculations that surround this topic. On the one hand Wallach does surely want to stress the omnipresent hazards that lurk in every corner of this brave new world. On the other hand he wants to bring our thinking about them down to earth by separating science-fiction-and-film-fueled myth from laboratory fact.

By this means Wallach wants to impress upon us that we humans still can be, and should be, in control. We need not, and should not, surrender to a supposed inevitability of machine dominance, not to mention, transformation of our very nature into something machine-like. No matter how magical the prospect seems to some (I will never forget the moment in one of our meetings when the speaker’s mention of technological magic moved several of us to reach into pocket or purse and hold up our new smartphone for the group’s awed admiration), or dystopian to others, neither the state of the art (and science) nor the inherent complexity of the issues need reduce us to ineffectual indulgence in fantasy or else utter hopelessness.

To this end Wallach highlights the notion of an inflection point, which is a brief interval at the cusp of a new development, in this case technological, where a real opportunity exists for society to assess and affect that development, sometimes even unto halting it in its tracks if it is deemed too dangerous. The book gives a case study of Wallach’s attempt to seize such a moment that now exists for the creation and global dispersal of autonomous weapons. At the same time Wallach does not want society to squelch promising and even essential new technologies due to unwarranted fears.

The book concludes with various practical suggestions for how humanity might try to achieve wise governance of our mechanical creations so that they will remain our “good servants” rather than become our “dangerous masters.”

An Illuminating Read

Despite the many benefits realized from emerging technologies, one becomes increasingly fearful of its more sinister aspects. From the media's relentless (complicit?) coverage of ISIS - a movement that essentially owes its global awareness ascension to social media - to the international race to see who can best whom in the world of hacking one another's most private information, it is easy for those of us less technology-inclined to feel pawns in an increasingly dangerous technology-driven world. In his most recent book, A Dangerous Master, author and ethicist Wendell Wallach educates readers on the accelerating momentum of technology accompanied in far too many cases by the disturbing lack of discourse beforehand concerning possible negative repercussions associated with its adaptation. Modern society, it seems, places a higher value on the continuous and rapid introduction of new technologies at the expense of having to deal after the fact with any negative consequences. According to Wallach; "Unfortunately, being seen as active during an actual crisis carries more weight with the chattering classes than having staved off a crisis that never develops." Wallach discusses a broad range of leading-edge technologies and their inevitable impact on all of us with sensitivity and clarity. This techno-neophyte found A Dangerous Master illuminating, if not comforting.

Serious Questions About Our Future in a World of Rapid and Complex Technological Change - We Ignore Them At Our Peril

Google, Facebook, Microsoft, and Baidu, among others, are hiring artificial intelligence researchers at an unprecedented rate - putting hundreds of millions into a race for better algorithms and smarter computers. Some scientific and technology luminaries (eg. Bill Gates, Stephen Hawking, Elon Musk, Steve Wozniak, have expressed considerable concern over where rapid advances in AI will take us. Fear of mass-produced Terminators, genetically-modified human embryos, self-driving cars, killer robots, uncontrollable emerging viruses, allowing humans to live to 150, etc. are becoming public more frequently.

Author Wallach's first example is that of the Large Hadron Collider (LHC). Prior to its startup, several knowledgeable scientists warned of the possibility it would create a tiny black hole into which Earth would disappear. Previously physicists working on the Manhattan Project worried that atomic bombs could set off a chain reaction in the earth's atmosphere - ending human life. Wallach's point is not that these predictions did not occur (actually, some scientists warn the LHC disaster may yet occur, but that these risks are appearing in more and more areas of endeavor and that it is also becoming increasingly difficult to objectively evaluate them because of their often probabilistic nature, occurring on the frontiers of science where clear answers are not available, and the invariable self-interests of involved individuals and entities. Potential economic and social order disasters may await in a world in which robots do almost all the work. Recent natural disasters (the Spanish Flu epidemic of 1918 and, a new strain of swine flu in 2009, along with man-made disasters (eg. thalidomide, Vioxx, Chernobyl, Union Carbide's Bhopal leak, the 2010 NYSE 'flash crash,' aerosol spray CFCs, and the growing threat to infrastructure posed by hackers. Geoengineering will become increasingly attractive as Global Warming progresses - and the risk of disastrous unexpected results.

Regulations offer a theoretical defense - but examination quickly exposes that defense as a chimera. Not only for reasons of complexity, unknown interactions, reaching tipping points, and vested interests, but also because of the increasing ease for DIY malefactors to operate and a political environment turning more and more against regulation.

Bottom-Line: 'A Dangerous Master' raises important points and offers credible prior examples. However, the book should have been condensed into an article.
