Easy to read, highly useful

Given that, unlike many frustrating classes where your $200 book ends up being a $200 paperweight, the class I took was centered on this book, it was extraordinarily useful. The chapters are fairly short and concise, the vocabulary easy to find and understand, and overall, it made what could have been a very tedious class into a much more bearable one. Would recommend to anyone.

I absolutely love this book on kindle. If you shrink the text, it resizes to fit on the screen. If you enlarge the figures and tables, they are still clear and you can read them clearly.

I wish the answers to the chapter questions had been placed somewhere so that I would know if I have the right answers when I'm viewing questions on the Kindle.

Not quite done with this one easier, but it gives pretty good practice labs for you to do to gain much needed experience. The only problem is that most people and even a lot of classrooms do not have the type of equipment necessary to complete these labs to the T.

M. Cherif Bassiouni is Emeritus Professor of Law and President Emeritus of the International Human Rights Law Institute at DePaul University College of Law. He is President of the International Institute of Higher Studies in Criminal Sciences, which he helped found in 1972, and Honorary President of the International Association of Penal Law, of which he was President between 1989 and 2004. Professor Bassiouni has led commissions of inquiry to investigate conflicts in Afghanistan, Bahrain, Iraq, Libya and the Former Yugoslavia. He has also been appointed to numerous United Nations posts, including as the Independent Expert to the Human Rights Council on victims rights. In 1999, he was nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize for his work establishing the International Criminal Court. Professor Bassiouni is the editor of 45 books, and the author of 23 books and 242 book chapters, journal articles and other legal publications on International Criminal Law, Comparative Criminal Law, Human Rights and U.S. Criminal Law. His writings on have been widely cited by leading international and national tribunals, including the International Court of Justice, the International Criminal Tribunal for the Former Yugoslavia, the International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda, the Extraordinary Chambers in the Courts of Cambodia, the European Court of Human Rights, the U.S. Supreme Court and State Supreme Courts, the U.K. House of Lords, the High Court of Australia, the Supreme Court of Canada, the Supreme Court of Israel and the Constitutional Court of South Africa""

This is the 2nd time I've bought this Bible. I don't read Hebrew or Greek, so it's nice to have the extra nuances of the words there on the page. It can get monotonous to keep re-reading the same set of expansion words over and over, but I just use the repetitions to slow down the text and think about the expansion words and how they relate to their particular verses. Don't just assume all the expansion words fit the context every time because they don't. The print size in this Bible is large enough to read with ease, and this version comes with some nice helps and maps at the end of the book. This version also does introductions to each individual book which is nice. I bought the hardback because I've found some of the new paperback Bibles just aren't sturdy enough to stand up to heavy use. I don't think this Bible does much in footnotes and cross-references, but it's a really nice Bible to just sit and read.

Richard Garrigues is one of the preeminent birding guides in Costa Rica, with more than twenty-five years' experience leading birding and natural history tours.He is the author of The Birds of Costa Rica: A Field Guide, second edition, illustrated by Robert Dean, and Photo Guide to Birds of Costa Rica, both from Cornell.

A very good field guide just got better

Garrigues & Dean (along with Cornell's Comstock Publishing) performed a virtual miracle in 2007 with the first edition of this work. Before then, birders in the field in Costa Rica had to use the superb but voluminous guide written by Stiles, Skutch & Gardner (1989), and they often resorted to separating the plates from the text for use in the field.

This second edition is not so much revolution as evolution, but it does include illustrations of 64 species not previously covered. In addition, Robert Dean has replaced some species illustrations with portraits he deems improved, and he has added some "supplementary" images (in-flight, alternate plumages, etc.).

The authors chose to follow the taxonomic nomenclature of Clements and a modified version of the Clements taxonomic sequence (not surprisingly retaining falcons with other diurnal raptors; inserting pigeons & doves, parrots and cuckoos between hummingbirds and trogons; and (perhaps most interesting of all) depicting the passerine swallows after the non-passerine swifts (also aerial specialists) and before the non-passerine hummingbirds). They believe these departures from taxonomic rigidity promote their goal of producing a guide that is more intuitively useful in the field, and I think they're right.

Seabirds seen offshore in Costa Rican pelagic environs have been added to this second edition, as have species associated with Cocos Island (300 miles southwest of the mainland).

Novice birders (and others) will appreciate the detailed descriptions & illustrations (six pages) of anatomical features (among the best I've found in any field guide). Birders new to Costa Rica and birders looking to diversify their Costa Rican birding experiences will value the brief chapter on climate and topography, including summaries of six different "life zones" and some of the ornithological features of each.

Range maps are now color-coded for seasonality, and have been updated. Species illustrations are at least equal in quality to those of the first edition, and many birders would rate at least a few as improvements. Some of the brighter colors depicted on some species in my first edition seem somewhat more subdued in this new guide, but in most instances the differences are subtle.

Inside the front cover (very conveniently) are images of adult vultures and raptors in flight.

Exceptional Guide to Costa Rica's Birds

We've got every Costa Rica bird, plant, and wildlife guide ever published and this is the one that gets the most use. It's not quite as comprehensive as Stiles and Skutch but it more than makes up for it in practicality (about half the bulk and better organized). I particularly like the format with range maps, identifying characteristics and species information on the facing page of each color plate so there's no flipping from plate to text 200 pages away. Organized by "families" and indexed by both common and scientific names it's easy to locate any species whether you're flipping through to spot the matching size shape and color or looking up a particular bird to find out what it looks and acts like so you can try to spot it in the field. The illustrations are finely detailed, vibrant, accurate and just downright beautiful.

This field guide in addition to being updated with the latest bird list has improved in maps and information compared to previous edition. As a Costa Rican and bird lover I can assure you this book is the best of birds in our country.

Not bad... not bad at all

A pure intro into VB 2012 with Windows 8 app XAML development in mind. With this book, I was able to catch up to speed VERY quickly, considering I haven't done much of any "serious" programming since the old VS6 days. The chapters are short, easy to read, easy to grasp, get right to the point, and provide small workable examples. I can now easily navigate around the IDE, write decent small apps on my own, and move on to more advanced books without tilting my head in question wondering what happened. I'm so thankful I wasn't persuaded into having to write another "Hello World" app as an introduction to "Writing Your First Application" ...followed by "See, wasn't that easy?" That kind of crap is a waste of time and paper in my opinion, but who am I? Anyway, thanks for keeping it real Michael Halvorson. The book is small... like just over 330 pages kind of small. So naturally, it doesn't dive too deeply into any of the nitty-gritty stuff. Just the basic need to know stuff, or in my case, a reference to compare how code was written years back to how it is now. I would have liked for it to have more details of data storage (reading/writing Application Data and binding perhaps), but does lightly touch on LINQ and XML files... implementing them in a functioning example app near the end of the book before going into the building and deployment of the Windows 8 store app.

To sum up, this book is VERY basic and does a great job bridging the gaps for old programmers stuck in their stubborn archaic ways, or for the true beginner wanting their first run at programming a Windows 8 app. I'm ready to jump into some advanced stuff now. Four stars for being just what I needed to get started. A bit more extensive... especially near the end, and I'd have easily tossed in the remaining star. Oh, I snagged the Kindle version first. Liking the first 1/4 of the ebook so much, I bought it in print. Prob didn't need to as I was having no issues viewing it on my tablet's reader. I just prefer reference-ish books in print (it's the whole looking stuff up & flipping around from front to back thing).

Essential for learning Windows 8 App Development

As an app developer, this book really shortened the learning curve for me. I found it particularly useful for building my core VB development skills, learning Windows 8 design principles, XAML markup, and what is required for app distribution via the Windows Store. While extremely technical, Halvorson treats me like I'm intelligent and teaches the concepts from the beginning - very helpful!! Get this book and you will build the skills you need for Visual Basic 2012 in the context of Windows 8 and Windows store programming. It's good to see that Halvorson continues to update his VB book. I have two older versions - and he knows his stuff!

Grossly misleading

This was 100% a "why JIEDDO is important" product and is hardly any form of IED encyclopedia. It includes numerous news articles about JIEDDO, military policies and small bit of general guidance/awareness related to convoy ops. This was possibly the worst cost-to-value purchase I've made on Amazon.
