The Boyfriend Game, The Girlfriend Game, The Whatever Game
By mikedoeseverything
THE GIRLFRIEND GAME is neat. I like it for what it is, literally: a short story collection that doesn't try and pretend to be something it's not (cough Haunted: A Novel anyone?). None of the stories are new but there are a few, probably, you haven't read, even if you consider yourself a Nick Antosca fan. I think I discovered, maybe, my new favorite short story by Nick Antosca. "The Early Years, Before His Great Adventures" it's called. A sort of modern-time story told in the style of a classic fable or fairy tale. Like, think Forrest Gump meets David Lynch meets Sleeping Beauty meets Michael Haneke. That's really good, I think.

These stories are dark, haunting and leave you wanting more. Some of the most original stories I've read in a while.

unforgettable short story collection
By skiki
Came for Rat Beast (my personal favorite) and its spartan but evocative prose and forgot to leave. Not usually a horror fiction fan, but I'll risk the nightmares for Nick's writing. Up there with George Saunders and Kelly Link for me when it comes to short story writers.

Selected Writings, by Alexandra Kollontai

“Alix Holt, in her careful, objective comments on the life and work of Miss Kollontai, has served her subject well. . . .She has given us this chance to become acquainted with the thought of a woman liberated before her time.” ―New York Times Book Review

Alexandra Kollontai―the only woman member of the Bolshevik central committee and the USSR’s first Minister of Social Welfare―is known today as a historic contributor to the international women’s movement, and as one of the first Bolshevik leaders to oppose the growth of the bureaucracy in the young socialist state. Her Selected Writings discuss the social democratic movement before the First World War, the history of the Russian women’s movement, and the debate between “feminist” and “socialist” women; the effects of the war on European socialism; the revolutions; the part played by women in the revolutionary events; the early manifestations of bureaucracy and Kollontai’s role as spokeswoman for the “workers’ opposition”; and morality, sexual politics, the family, and prostitution. It also includes writings from her later life as a Soviet official. Each section is introduced by a commentary in which Alix Holt explains the background and critically sets Kollontai’s unique lifework in its historical and biographical contexts, demonstrating both its necessary limitations and its extraordinary range.

Relevant?
By EriKa
Lately as I have been rereading texts by such writers and thinkers as Alexandra Kollontai, Rosa Luxemburg and later analysis of their thinking by Raya Dunayevskaya, I ask myself the same question people ask me, perplexed as they see that I am reading something so "outdated" about a system that was "proven wrong": is this information relevant today, aside from the historical perspective gained from it? Yes, I argue that it is very relevant. It proves, if nothing else, that issues, particularly for women, that were issues 100 years ago are still issues today. Many societies have made little or no social progress, and some have arguably moved backwards.

This particular book, with analysis from Alix Holt, is quite useful and telling because Holt provides a context and an even-handed critique of Kollontai's writing. Kollontai has been dismissed by many as an overly idealistic thinker, and her thoughts on family and sexuality have earned Kollontai an undeserved reputation as someone who advocated sexual promiscuity and irresponsibility as well as "moral decay". Naturally these analyses are overly simplistic; Kollontai was a revolutionary (not just in the traditional sense, having participated actively in the Russian Revolution and serving as Lenin's only female commissar, but also a revolutionary on social norms and sociology). Kollontai questioned the role of family in society and predicted that "family" as the nuclear unit would cease to exist (under socialism/Communism, in her evaluation) because family is an economic/need-based construct. The erosion of the family unit as economic unit would change the dynamics between men and women and would create the need for in depth evaluation of sexuality and the basis for relationships. Kollontai asked many questions on this topic in earnest, which were integral questions to the development of Soviet society (beset by major problems as it was) yet as time went on, her ideas were marginalized and even demonized. As the Soviet propaganda machine grew (mostly under Stalin), Kollontai no longer had a voice. Suddenly these ideas, in the words of Alix Holt, "became more and more preposterous and the party quite sensibly put its foot down. In actual fact, things were quite otherwise, for her ideas changed very little. It was the attitudes of men and women both inside and outside the party that were changing and giving rise to objections against what had previously been accepted without question." Kollontai watched the Revolution for which she had fought (and in the name of which she had been blind and naive to many realities) be co-opted by the Stalin personality cult and excessive bureaucracy. It is evident that Kollontai was a personality more than a philosopher. She had beliefs and ideas, but she, as Holt points out in later analysis, failed to form her observations into real and meaningful analysis. Many of her most striking ideas are barely developed. Kollontai objected to being linked with a women's movement or a feminist movement in her time because she felt that women's rights would be part and parcel of any successful proletarian revolution, and that equality would be achieved automatically. This is part of Kollontai's short-sightedness, faithfully documented in this book and analyzed by Holt. Kollontai had valuable ideas she never researched or explored fully; she recognized intrinsic problems within society (particularly those pertaining to women and children), but she blindly accepted that the revolution and the Soviet government would take care of all these things. By the time she realized that the "dream" was slipping away, it was too late. Stalin had the power to silence her one way or another (she is one of the few to survive the purges, although it can be argued that she was sidelined effectively by being sent as Soviet ambassador to Norway, Mexico, etc.)

This book coupled with other readings about or by Kollontai give a vivid picture of Russia during and after the revolution and the hopes many people shared for building a worker's society. The book also illustrates, as I stated, how the same concerns that Kollontai and colleagues faced in forming a new government still plague society today. Although strides have been made in "granting" women more equality, they are still not "equal" in many regards. Kollontai, who was so ahead of her time, gives modern women pause to consider that if serious feminist and equality matters are STILL problematic now, almost 100 years after Kollontai was fighting for the equality of all people, we have not really "blazed the trail" to women's rights. At the same time, though, it is not just society "holding women back" but also the attitudes of many women themselves. (For example, Bill Maher said that when women want to elect a woman to the US presidency, they will. They have the majority. It is not society necessarily that isn't ready; perhaps it's women themselves.) Unfortunately Kollontai faced an uphill battle educating people as to their individual rights and responsibilities... we still face this issue now. Relevant? Absolutely so.

Nobody should have to die in pain. Nobody should have to die alone.

Dying Well brings us to the homes and bedsides of families with whom Dr. Byock has worked, telling stories of love and reconciliation in the face of tragedy, pain, medical drama, and conflict. Through the true stories of patients, he shows us that a lot of important emotional work can be accomplished in the final months, weeks, and even days of life. It is a companion for families, showing them how to deal with doctors, how to talk to loved ones—and how to make the end of life as meaningful and enriching as the beginning.

Amazon.com Review
On his deathbed, faced with creditors and unpaid bills, Oscar Wilde said despairingly, "I am dying beyond my means!" If only the poor, beleaguered genius had read this book! None of us gets out of here alive, but reading this book will lessen your fear of the ultimate end and give you some guidance about enjoying your life to the fullest right up until your final moment. Do people really enjoy life in the face of death? People do. The stories of individuals in Dr. Byock's book will move and inspire you to change your feelings about the end of your life, and also your feelings about your life in the present.

From Publishers Weekly
This study of how to die well displays uncommon vitality. Byock, president elect of the American Academy of Hospice and Palliative Care, is a gifted storyteller. Beginning with his own father's terminal illness, he details without scientific cant the process of decline that awaits most of us. The case studies, which form the humanistic soul of this work, never devolve into the maudlin or saccharine. Life on the edge of the great crossing is explored in all its sadness and pathos, but Byock also makes room for wisdom, hope and even the joy of final understanding. By recounting the passages of patients in his Missoula, Mont., practice, Byock makes a forceful case for hospice care and against physician-assisted suicide. He demonstrates how the physical pain and emotional despair of the dying may be handled. The family constellation of the terminally ill is also analyzed, with emphasis on a hospice's ability, through its doctors, nurses, psychologists and social workers, to help those left behind. Not only is this book informative, especially the question-and-answer section at the end, it is also insightful. Readers will sense Byock's personal growth as his understanding of final issues flowers through a 20-year specialization. Byock recalls his growth from a callow resident to a concerned son and, finally, to a healer with a mission. Whether it's the middle-aged mother who must resolve disillusionment with her sister, the bitter father of three who achieves serenity or the gutsy teenage girl with a rare genetic disease, the people whose sojourns Byock recounts receive from him the dignity they merit. From Library Journal
Many terminally ill people fear that their last days will be spent as burdens to their families, helpless, without dignity, and in unbearable pain. Often, the only alternative to such a death seems to be assisted suicide. In either situation, the dying person and family members are denied the opportunity to make the most of their remaining lives. Byock, a hospice physician practicing in rural Montana, learned well the possibilities for dying while caring for his father, who died from pancreatic cancer during Byock's medical training. This book tells the story of his father's final illness and those of hospice patients Byock has helped through the dying process. Focusing on the clinical, emotional, and spiritual aspects of death, the stories emphasize Byock's unshakable belief that physical and psychological suffering can always be alleviated through the devoted efforts of hospice caregivers. He offers realistic yet compassionate answers to the hard questions asked by dying patients, their families, and a society unwilling to accept that all life eventually comes to an end. Reduced my fears
By Katy Butler
A reassuring and hopeful guide for anyone new to the process of death and dying -- and in the age of improved public sanitation and advanced medicine, that means a lot of us. Perhaps our great-grandparents wouldn't have needed a book like this, as they witnessed deaths throughout the lifespan. "Dying Well" reduced my fears and informed me: A. about the process of dying,B. what medicine can do to help, C. that once you get over the fact you're dying and can't stop it, you can have people help you meet other goals -- snuggling with your cat, graduating high school, going sailing for the last time, having your gurney trundled into the woods to say goodbye to the trees. (Those are my examples, most of them are not from this book.) I consider this book a pioneering, foundational and seminal text -- I'm amazed it hasn't been reviewed by more people. Given our desire to avoid the subject out of fear and misplaced "positive thinking," we need more books like this to paint the landmarks and fill in the various colors of the landscape of death and dying, especially very slow deaths by "the dwindles" that many elderly people experience now.

Finding Peace at the End of Life
By Amazon Customer
This book has been difficult to read, because facing death is difficult. The manner of our dying is as unique as the manner of our living, and having a choice in the way we spend our final days is important. This book gives a glimpse into the life of hospice physician, Dr. Ira Byock. In it, he shares the stories of patients (including his own father) and families who are "exploring the inherently human experience of dying."

This is a GREAT read for those who are themselves dying, for people who are caring for someone who is actively dying, or for those who are searching for answers; death needn't be a painful, lonely experience.

I was often moved by Dr. Byock's words of wisdom to his patients; that it was okay to die at home, surrounded by family, it was okay to stop eating and drinking if one wasn't hungry or thirsty, it was okay to hold onto those the things which define us; having our nails done, wearing nice pyjamas, smelling good, craving the touch of others, being read to, participating in conversations, feeling valued.

More importantly, this book showed me that there is still a possibility to learn, to heal our minds and hearts, to forgive others and OURSELVES, to express love and compassion, and to find purpose and meaning behind our lives while dying or while caring for someone who is. Spending time with someone at the end of their life, whether the person is conscious or not, is beneficial to all parties involved.

Please read this book, though you may need tissues...and perhaps a glass of wine.

Absolute Must Read IF You or Loved One is Dying
By Descca
This is written by a hospice doctor, giving us the benefit of his years of experience with the dying. The outstanding part of this book is his case study of individual patients and their families during the saga of death. Many a chapter brought tears to my eyes. And it also reads like a mystery story in that you turn the next page to see what is going to happen next. At the end of the book is an invaluable FAQ section (that was worth the price by itself).

I bought the book so as to know how to better relate with relatives that have the big C. I was looking for some understanding of what they might be feeling and how to talk to them, things that I might do to ease their mental anguish rather than add to it by inept, uncaring action. This book delivers in all respects and is one you may re-read from time to time for its striking insights.

All of us are in the process of dying, some of us are just closer than others - keep that in mind and buy this book.

An awesome find
By Josephine Kwan
The book is 25 x 27cm in size.
The writer Gerald Ackerman is an art historian who went to Florence to study how to use this course at the atelier of Daniel Graves and Charles Cecil before writing this book.
You can find all the Charles Bargue 197 plates in this book, with instructions on how to use them.
Vol 1 plates are all whole-page drawings.
Vol 2 plates are over 80% whole-page drawings.
Vol 3 has only about 20 full-page illustrations and the rest are pretty tiny. Despite this shortfall, I still consider it a great book to have.
The book also talks about Charles Bargue's life and his awesome paintings (in his later years).
It is interesting to know that van Gogh worked through this course more than once on his own and Picasso copied these plates at the Barcelona Academy.
This is one of the few drawing books that I find truly worth my money.

Excellent resource for learning atelier drawing methods
By Catherine Moore
Excellent resource for learning atelier drawing methods. In addition to the book, however, you will also require some additional course instruction and there are excellent free resources on line. The Bargue Drawing Companion from the www.AcademyofRealist Art.com shop online offers a video demonstration for $100 and The Davinci Initiative offers free lesson plans that are very informative. http://www.davinciinitiative.org/free-lesson-plans.html And, I would also recommend Mandy Hallenius's series of YouTube videos very helpful: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ICs4gpyQikY
